[RPC O] 200M Freestyle Free Verse [Closed]

Post by Georgeanna » Thu Aug 09, 2018 3:09 am

August 8th - 16th

This summer has indeed been busy, but the games aren't over yet! Welcome to the 200 M Freestyle. You all have the chance to follow in the footsteps of poets before you and mystify audiences with your slick use of words and lyrical style. Whether you be oracle, muse, or mortal, get ready to compete in a contest that will put your writing skills to the test.

As you may have gathered, this is a poetry competition! Specifically, an event focused on a particular style of poetry: free verse.

Some of you may be wondering, what exactly is free verse? Here is what the Poetry Foundation has to say on the matter:
Poetry Foundation wrote:Nonmetrical, nonrhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythms of speech. A regular pattern of sound or rhythm may emerge in free-verse lines, but the poet does not adhere to a metrical plan in their composition.
However, as this is the 200 M Freestyle, you will have to write a poem consisting of at least 200 words, but no more than 220. Please list your word count at the bottom of your entry.

:bluebullet: Must be free verse
:bluebullet: 200-220 words
:bluebullet: One entry per competitor

If you so happen to participate, you will receive an Olympian title. That being said, if your poem is one of the top three you could receive a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal winner title instead. Medals will be applied to your team's overall count and could mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Choose one of the following prompts:
:bluebullet: Wisdom
:bluebullet: Olive Tree
:bluebullet: Battle

To the person staring back at me
To the man in the mirror
To the hopeful, innocent kid staring through my eyes
Daydreaming of the goals he'll one day accomplish, do me a favor:

Stop it.
Don't patronize me.

I'm not some masterpiece painted onto the ceiling of a church.
No one went blind from the pain and stress of creating me.
You can scream through the void all you want
You can puff your chest and try and fool me.
But we know what you're doing --

Stop it.
Don't patronize me.

To the person passing by
To the tourist who gapes at the horrors in the Colosseum
To the kind, patient woman waiting to say loving words
Hoping to reach the lost child within, do me a favor:

Take the image of that kid
and jab a knife through his soft flesh
Stab him.
Carve him.
Gut him.
Watch him sputter as dreams pour out of his wounds.

Handle him with the delicacy and precision
of a man in a slaughterhouse
of a marathon rapist
of Caligula tearing a baby from the womb of his sister.

.epoH .yM .lliK

And if you say
"You're worth it"
I swear to fucking God I'm gunna snap.

So as you sit there
Thinking how to "help"...

Stop it.
Don't patronize me.
Prompt: Battle
Word Count: 220
(lol.. I sure hope this counts as free verse, I'm not really sure.)

Most nights she lay awake, listening for the sound of tires.
The slam of a car door.
One... two... three... all the way to sixty.
The echo of heels.
Most nights she waited for sounds that meant her mother was home, so she could sleep.
Most nights she lay awake, disappointed.

Most days they were told to stay in their room; her and her brother.
Sometimes it lasted for only a few hours.
Most days, their pseudo-father floated away into the clouds, an entire day slipping from his grasp.
Two hungry children, forgotten.
Most days, her stomach growled waiting for just

Some days she dared to ask for something to eat, something to sustain them until the next day;
most days they told her she didn't need to eat, she already weighed too much.

Every day she needed a parent,
a caretaker,
someone to simply be there.
There was only disappointment.

Most nights she was young and hopeful, waiting for her mother to come home.

Most days she was young and hungry, waiting for someone to feed her.

Every day she was young and lonely, waiting for someone to care for her.

Today, she's young and wise, aware that she can depend on no one.

What does it mean, by GamerScribe.
Prompt; Wisdom
Word Count; 216
I used to think I knew it all.
We all did.
Every man, woman and child;
All joined hand in hand in certainty.
In self-assuredness.

Never wondering how or why the world works,
But always trusting that it does.
Trusting that you can go about your day,
Can face a brand-new dawn,
Can simply carry on…
With no struggle, no trial and no…

But then the world works its magic.
Then other people have their say.
Then we start to listen to the hum,
The drum of seven billion hearts,
All beating erratically.
All stuttering and out of step,
Nobody is in sync.

No one seems to know,
To know what’s going on or why…
Or how the world works.
It infects us.
It misdirects us.
This not knowing, this failing to be sure.
This simple sense of lack,
Of loss,
Of the decay of peace.
The faltering of progress.

Different words with the same meaning.

Growing up,
Growing old.
Growing less sure of yourself.
Growing more and more aware that…
No matter how much you fight it,
No matter how much you’ve worked,

Eventually we grow wise.
We learn that we know nothing.
And that no matter how much we work,
We never really will.

Prompt: Battle
Word Count: 200

Battle was joined, for the glory of the gods.
The prefect chance to test their strength, and prove their valour.
The ring of steel on steel fills the air, battle cries roared like thunder.
The gods would be pleased with their display, the martial might of their chosen people.
For the sweet taste of victory, and the gods reward, they press on the attack.

The blood flows from open wounds.

The battle still rages, now for vengeance and the fallen.
They will pay for every step taken, and every life snuffed out.
The smell of death stains the air, as the bodies pile up.
The wails of mourning haunting, driving on those that remained to greater acts of violence.
None would remain untouched by war, all had something lost to revenge.

And so the blood flowed across the land.

The battle long since past, and all are gone.
None to avenge, nor to mourn, just the stillness of the end.
The scars on the land were all that remained, and in time even that will be worn away.
Til nothing of their struggle remains, and no one left to recall their battle.

None cared for why the blood had flowed.

I know he doesn't do it to anger me.
I know he doesn't do it to show me.
He only does it because he loves me.
He wants to be like me, holds me as a god,
but every time he does these things, he treads uneven ground

This young one looks up at me as if I were a statue, a monument.
But I'm only here as a human, along with flaws and problems.
I wish he didn't have to be the one to suffer because I can't solve them.
I don't mean to hurt him, and I don't mean to be rude,
but I wish this child wish stars in his eyes looked up to someone else.

I don't like to hurt people, don't like to be one to cause a problem.
But all I seem capable of doing is just that.
I don't want this little boy to grow up to be like me,
So I'll change myself and better myself to better model for him.
Because this starry eyed child, deserves better than me.

I love him with all my heart, and I don't want to hurt him, ever.
But this starry-eyed boy, not wanting to hurt anyone,
he needs a better brother.
I'm not dying until the sergeant says I can, and he's dead. Wattpad: https://www.wattpad.com/user/Carte-y

Prompt: Olive tree
Word count: 220
Title: Always Olive

In the dry heat of summer I’ve watched you grow,

Stretching toward the the sun basking in her warmth.

When the rain failed to come I watered you,

When you grew to big I trimmed you,

You were my tree and I shared my love with you.

Then someone else came for my love

And you shared your love with us.

We picked from your branches in the breeze of the fall.

We carved our initials into you bark on brisk winter night.

We got engaged beneath your leaves in the spring rain.

We wed in your shade on a hot summer day.

When I had my son there was only one name for him.

I wanted him to be

Just like you.

I watched him grow under your careful watch,

He napped in your shadow and swung from your branches,

When he was older he leaned back against you trunk working on his education.

He grew

He became

He was always

Just like you.

Time ran fast slipping from my fingers.

Soon my son was an adult and I was old and wrinkled.

You still held your place in the ground,

Then the breeze took away my love.

I went soon after,

forever together, buried in a casket made of you.
"What you look like on the outside is not what makes you cool at all. I mean, I had a mullet and wore parachute pants for a long, long time, and I'm doin' okay."
