Double Crossed Facade (Antaric x Animya)

Post by Animya » Thu Jul 12, 2018 7:07 am

Name: Ichirou (一郎) Genmoto (眼本)
Age: 24
Sex: Male
Position: Officer in the Shogun’s private security force/body guard

General Personality: He’s a soft-spoken officer but with a clear opinion. As he is still fresh in the ranks he wishes not to anger his superiors nor does he want to be found out. He’s trying to make a name for himself, and strongly believes that pragmatically expressing his opinions will eventually find him in the Shogun’s good graces. He may be seen as stoic and unresponsive or inattentive but notices more than the average person in the ranks.

General Appearance: Hazel-brown eyes, of which the left is slightly (but noticeable in some lights) darker than the other. Long black hair, which was vowed never to be cut to show dedication to his faith. Mostly seen worn in a loose ponytail. Fairly big eye-shape, fine dark eyebrows, small but flat nose, fuller lips and a strong jawline. The features don’t match each other, not necessarily the first thing one would think off when asked about “handsome”.

Does have a very light complexion, long limbs, and good proportions. Doesn’t seem to have a lot of muscle but displays enough definition in his neck to suggest there is strength hidden underneath the baggy clothing. Wears a dark red hakama which almost seems purple, together with a light grey kimono underneath and a dark grey/purple patterned haori overtop of it with an unknown sigil binding the jacket.

Short Background: Firstborn son and only child to the Genmoto family of samurai descent. Ichirou has always lived in training and was prepared to be the next in line. This makes him well-poised and extremely aware of etiquette. As the fall of the Shogunate was nearing, his family’s name was losing worth and he served the Yamada family as an adopted son. Here he trained with western weaponry to better be able to protect those above him.

His adoptive father frequented an establishment in the red-light district and had an (in)famous Oiran named Kyoka (虚佳) recommend him for the position of bodyguard to the Shogun’s guards and Bakufu. He was given an opportunity to prove himself and has now been able to climb his way up after saving the leader of the tenth unit of the Shinsengumi, Sanosuke Harada, in an unorthodox swift manner. He was offered a spot in the unit by Sanosuke but politely declined, saying he would directly take the sword aiming at the Shogun instead; this statement later earned him the title of officer.

Abilities: As stated above he’s the child of samurai descent, thus having been trained in swordsmanship. Ichirou has a very peculiar way of fighting though, one called left-handed Iai-do. Thus making him a master in swiftly drawing his sword and responding to sudden attacks. It is the art of drawing one's sword with smooth and controlled movements before striking the opponent and cleansing the blade in a fluent motion before replacing the sword in its scabbard.

He is also known to be able to fight with a naginata, this weapon, however, he does control with his right-hand. Additionally, to this, he can be seen carrying a gun on his person, which he knows how to use quite well, but is not as confident with. As a ninja they’re particularly good in shapeshifting, spirit-awakening/cultivation and healing.

Weapons: On the right hip hang both a long curved double-edged sword and a kodachi (short sword). Both have an engraved dark scabbard, the inscription unknown as no-one is ever allowed to come close to it. The hilt has a silver carved and ornate floral guard type and is covered with both dark purple and grey fabric, colours unknown to any faction or group.

The naginata has a similar wrapping at the hilt and a tassel dangling close to the blade in matching colours. The gun is a standardized Colt model of 1860~1868 making. It has no specific features save for the engraved silver hilt.

Name: Haruto Asahi (Tokugawa Akechi)
Age: 28
Sex: Male
Position: Elite Samurai (Seieibushi)

General Personality: Haruto is often seen as the quiet, but forceful among his peers. When he often speaks, those who know him and around him know to listen. His body language and the way that he carries himself tends for most to avoid his presence as it can be seen as him looking down upon them. He is reliable and trustworthy. He gives his word and he follows through with just that.

General Appearance: A harsh set of blue eyes that hold wisdom and experience behind young eyes. Black hair, which reaches his waist, is often braided, but hidden in a top knot or underneath of his armor. His facial features are more round in nature. His nose of normal size, but with a bend in the bridge from a breaking that never healed right. His lips are thinner, but of good shape when smiling.

His skin is darker from being out in the sun nearly every day. Barrell-chested with strong arms and fairly good musculature over his whole body, but not big enough for one to think that he was just strong. Those who have seen him in combat knows he is more agile than he seems from his harsh training. When not in his battle-gear, Haruto wears a dark green hakama with a cherry blossom embroided on the left sleeve. He keeps his attire simple and straight to the point.

Short Background: Haruto was born a commoner along with two younger brothers. His family was caught up during a battle when he was young, which seen both his parents killed for treason and his brothers along with them. He survived only because a Seieibushi took him under his wing as his apprentice. Since the age of 10, he has been trained by some of the best the Shogun armies has with a variety of weapons. As he grew and became stronger, he begin to take dominance in his classes and even became a full-fledged Samurai by the time he turned 16.

He married when he turned 21 to a beautiful young woman. They had settled on the outskirts of the town to live their life away from the hustle and bustle of what the Shogun life was. This proved to be a mistake. A yokai came one night during a full moon and took his wife and child. He came back from the Shogun army to find their blood all over their house and with only the fleeting image of the yokai itself as it disappeared into the unknown. That was when his demeanor and personality changed. Since then, his only focus has been trying to find this yokai and also progressing his own abilities so that when it came again, he would be able to avenge his family.

Abilities: While exceptional with swordplay, Haruto true skill comes in the form of two-weapon fighting. His sword play comes from overpowering his opponent, but isn't above of dancing with them too in the heat of the moment. He is also pretty exceptional with a long bow.

Weapons: He carries two full-fledged katana's on his person at all times. Often sheathed on the same side in plain wooden sheaths with a burned look to the wood itself. The hilt is wrapped with simple leather wraps that have been stained dark red. The end of the hilt of each blade both have a cherry blossom engraved into the metal.

While he does not often carry it, when the need arises he does bring a long bow that he keeps strapped to his back.

It was early in March when the snow had started to melt and wash away the red of war that had passed through the western lands. The clans which had supported the Shogunate started to dwindle in numbers even further, ironically leading to more wars in lower numbers. The difference in weaponry, a technique imported from the western countries such as England seemed to provide the Imperial army the upper hand. It made it even easier for them to call for reinforcements. Their army was bound to win, and as more joined, they had to do less to call for arms. The Shogunate was losing strength, but never did it give up. A war wasn’t lost until the last man had died, and although the head had fallen the limbs were still moving, Bretagne offered them help too, there were still several domains that had not fled. They would not hand over his political power to the emperor.

Ichirou had come to the fortress about 2 months earlier, he had fought alongside the Shinsengumi and had visited the Aizu domain during that time. It was a time full of death and despair, and the turnover in the higher echelons was high. He managed to make his way to a decent enough position though. They had come back from a minor fight only a few days ago but already the Shogun had called his bodyguard, commanders, vice-commanders and domain leaders in to hold a war council together with his most trusted men. Surprisingly Ichirou was among those he had called.

This was the first time he had been asked to sit in on such an important meeting, it was of utmost importance he would show correct decorum. As such he quickly, but with much control, made his way to the council-hall. Clearing his throat he was allowed entrance and opened the sliding door before stepping in and silently closing it. He inclined his head to those around him and made way towards his rightful place; the utmost corner to the righter side of where the Shogun was to sit. He sat down with a bend of the knee and rested his behind on his heels.

When his eyes reached those of the demon vice-commander Hijikata a shiver ran down his back unwillingly. That man, he knew something. Every time he spoke, just alike the Shogun, it was as if he was making Ichirou privy to something. Today, surely, wouldn’t be any different. The hall remained silent, awaiting the arrival of the Shogun and his two main-guards. As they were inside their own fortress there was no need for excessive protection, the man had clearly expressed his desire for some privacy while here, so they had no right but to abide by his wishes.

Haruto knelt beneath of an old cherry blossom, one of the few left in the surrounding area; one gift that had been granted to him as he had rose in the ranks of the Shinsengumi. He rested upon his knees, his head bowed to the tree itself. This was one of the only peaceful times he had come to realize and accept. The only time that his mind seemed to ease from the burdens that it and his shoulders often held. But, as often as it seemed he knelt here when the peaceful thoughts began to subside, the pictures of the scene in his old house would spring back. He grimaced and growled underneath of his breath as he reached out a hand to place upon the trunk of the tree and stood. His fingers trailed along the rough bark before he pulled away.

He had a couple of fresh scars traveling along the length of his forearms, some longer, while some were small that were still healing from the recent battle. He had gotten careless then, almost like he had been seen looking for death, but he knew that was a dishonorable course. His two bodyguards met him as soon as he left the cherry blossom. They walked through the buildings, weaving his way through the back alleys to avoid the gazes of those under him. He needed a calm mind for this council as he knew that it was to be important; to decide the direction of where they would be heading. While they were losing strength, Haruto knew that they had to change their course of action to deal with the new weaponry and technology that the Imperial army held over them now.

As Haruto finally entered the building, he headed in the direction of the council-hall and when approaching the doors, those who stood outside did not give a sign of his approach. No nod, no acknowledgment, but they did not stop him from entering. He eased the door shut as to be respectful enough to those who had already entered the meeting. He approached his place among the council, which was the head of the table itself. He had become the newest Shogun to take this place, and his command had not been long yet. He did not know whether he had even wanted this position, but it was thrust upon him. He had to accept it and try to do something worth it, because he may be the last if this war with the Imperial Army was to be their last. He knelt down upon his knees before resting into a comfortable enough position. His back straight. His eyes took in who were already there, they paused briefly upon the newcomer to the meeting. He had made it a point to invite him. As he was the youngest to have joined them and had risen quickly among the ranks, he knew that this man may offer something of import to what subject he wished to bring up.

The only person that Haruto inclined his head and nodded towards in the room at all, was the vice-commander. He held his respect as he knew what the man was like upon the field of battle. Brutal. Cold. Calculated. More of those who had been asked to this meeting filled the room and took their respective seats. As the last person that was invited made his seat, Haruto looked upon them again, before he finally began to speak.

"You may be wondering why I have called this council so soon after our last battle. Some of us are still healing from wounds we have acquired. And that is why I wanted to assemble you all here," his voice was calm, almost cold. This was what the men who had been around him had come to expect, few of them knew the man more than just his progress on the field of battle. "With the sickness that has fallen upon the Imperials, with them bringing in the western technology, we must find a way to combat this better. A way to endure and survive. I will not allow our way of life. Our history. Our.. heritage to be thrown to the way-side because of them."

"With that, I have asked you here to hear your opinions on how you think we must proceed to win this war."

Head down, hair coverings most of his features, Ichirou followed the Shogun’s frame as he passed him from just under his long lashes. With pursed lips, the youngster listened as the man in charge almost seemed to apologize, something which seemed unconventional to say the least. In battle and with orders he’d been direct and cold in a sense. This seemed… too soft? Too uncertain even, but perhaps this was how he gained trust to use it later? Ichirou slightly shook his suspicions off before straightening his back.

The sickness, yes. The dreaded red of the lungs, the slow death of those unfortunate enough to be infected was inevitable and painful. It spread like wildfire in close quarters, and people were sent out to ‘heal’ in fields of nature with clear air, but they rarely ever returned. It didn’t discriminate though, and those in the ranks spoke of it killing the head, which explained a fair amount for Ichirou. However nothing had been confirmed nor denied, and this wasn’t a topic to tackle over tea.

However much going against what was set out as the assignment, the words uttered by Akechi were something Ichirou could align himself with easily. Their culture, art, history, and heritage wasn’t something to be ignored or overlooked. Truthfully speaking, the emperor who was thrust upon the throne was way too young and a mere puppet for those in search of power; those with money and an obsession to control those around them.

There had been a silence allowing Ichirou to slightly disappear in his own thoughts, but it was interrupted by the sudden exclamation of one the domain leaders, Murasaki. He was here as the representative of the lower section of the Aizu domain, those who had vouched never to leave the Shogun’s side and had thus far lived up to that promise, regardless of the odds. They all knew were the Aizu to align themselves to the emperor, the bridge to the west would be readily available, and the odds will tilt even further.

Murasaki spoke, his voice calm and collected but with a hint of unease. ”The death has spread to them as well, they can’t fight it either. The English don’t know any more than the French.” he tried to assure the Shogun. A cacophony of whispers began, but he continued. ”It doesn’t hurt nor increase our chances to win. That’s all I’m saying.” he wanted to end but soon added ”…m’lord.”

It was tempting to speak up, the Shogunate hadn’t received newly developed weapons from Bretagne for a couple of months now, maybe even nearing a year, the old weapon Ichirou had on his person was newer than what most commanders received after a long time of training. Regardless of the illness, their weapons posed a problem. Even those trained with the weaponry couldn’t quite use it fluently, making it more of a hazard than an advantage. But in the end; he didn’t. He kept schtum, just as he’d usually do.

A laughter rang through the hall, and every single eye landed on the shaking shoulders of the person responsible for this sound. ”This is the least of our problems. Not only are the weapons we received old compared to the Imperial Army, they have allegedly taken up agreements with not only the Tora-clan but also surrounding bastard Oni.” he scuffed. A pin drop silence fell in the room, an uncomfortable atmosphere found its way up into everyone, creeping from their fingertips to their chests.

To some, the fear may be from the Oni, others, those better informed, knew what it meant that the Tora-clan was involved. This particular clan had ties with Oni-royalty and had mixed blood, or so rumour had. Females were rare in those lands, so Oni bred with humans and created offspring. Only those sufficiently powerful were allowed back in the clan, incest wasn’t rare and mixing pure blooded with those strong enough to survive was not frowned upon.

Ichirou had a similar feeling, but it wasn’t for the reason those surrounding him froze in their place. His face drained of expression, the only feature that stood out was the fact that a muscle in his neck momentarily tensed up before releasing again as he raised his head, waiting for a response from the Shogun.
