Welcome, mortals, to your next event. The challenges set to you thus far will test your resilience, speed and coordination; but these feats alone are not the only way to win the favour of a god. This new contest will set a high bar, and overcoming it will require not only a swift approach, but a precise one. Look before you leap, people of the Collective, for even the slightest mistake could cost you victory.

Image

For this contest, we'll be asking you to write a haiku on a specific theme. Haiku are a type of short poem originating in Japan, which have only three lines, but can have any number of words. Each line must contain a set number of syllables; the first line having five syllables, the second line seven and the third five. Let's look at an example;

(5) The sky is so blue
(7) The sun is so warm up high
(5) I love the summer

Points will be awarded for both the quality of your haiku overall, how well it fits the theme and whether you've adhered to the 5-7-5 syllable structure - so make sure you're counting!

As Hades is the God of the Dead, let's keep the contest appropriate and have you write your haikus on the theme of Death. Remember, how you interpret that theme is entirely up to you; you might examine it in the literal sense, or focus on the 'death' of a particular stage of life, or even the temporary death that comes to the world during the winter months - ultimately, the choice is yours. What I would like you to do is include a couple of lines along with your entry, just highlighting what aspect of the theme you chose to look at. Quick and easy, right?

Image
  • One haiku per contestant, please
  • All entries must be in by 18 July. You can edit your entries up until then
  • Your additional lines are separate from your haiku and won't influence word count, structure, etc.

Image

As with all of our Olympic events, every competitor will net themselves an Olympian title until mid-September - except for our top three, who earn an exclusive Gold, Silver or Bronze Medalist title depending on where they place. There's also a chance of further glory if you manage to impress the Gods of Olympus, so make sure to put your best foot forward.

Grief, the desire to ask gods to change their minds, and even bargain with them.

I stand at her grave.
To you I cry out in pain.
Oh please let me trade.

It shows two pink strips
Our first kid, a baby girl
We'll never know her.

I know too many people who have lost a child, for many it would have been their first. The first funeral I can remember attending was for a close family friend who would have been having her first child. Death, in the literal sense; death does not discriminate.

Not sure if I am allowed to do this yet but hey, I can just delete it if I'm not

The death is a natural thing, not something to be somber for but accepting of

A field of roses
Where the fallen go in peace
And the tired rest
I am a person! Yaaaaaaaay~!

How to keep secrets:
She whispered one in his ear,
And two in the chest.

Death in a literal sense here. Few things are more intimate than close-range assassination.

A lotus blossom
Withers on the murky pond
Seeds like open eyes

Death like the tarot card. New beginnings, and being open to new possibilities.
Death helps us see the light and reminds us of what's really important.

Cradled in my arms,
They are taken from the world.
Why is this my job?

Instead of looking at death as a concept, I chose to contemplate the term as a conscious entity. Wanted to imagine a personification of Death that loves life so much that they are deeply conflicted over their own purpose.

You guys going to stand for that?

No, Sammy, we are not.

Haiku about a death of an inspiring person, and the feelings associated with it. Any inspiring person, I wasn't writing it with anyone in mind.

I won't fall back to a headstart! Due to that, here is a haiku about death as a beautiful gift.

Farewell, tainted world,
For I am now ascending
To a better realm.

A car fatal crash caused by a fight

A muffled, angry curse
The screech of rubber on road
And a final crunch

its end is chosen in life
I do not fear it

Must I beg for you
Oh dark lover come with me
In flames we shall dance

A person begging for death to take them, even though they know they’re going to hell.

Wishing for the passing of a spirit into peace. Personal one for me.

Spring becomes summer--
the shadow of your absence
makes days into years.

It's a pretty straightforward take on the prompt of death: life after the passing of a beloved leaves the passing of seasons meaningless.
In the book of my heart, there is nought but you
In every word, every sentence, and every page.

Slow tired breathing fades
Eyes go dark, life slips away
A quiet sunrise
Here is mine! I feel like my entry is pretty straight forward, end of a life while a new day begins.

He slammed the door closed
Never to be seen again
Her dad didn't care

I basically wanted to look at someone being left forever, the death of a relationship, but not one you would normally expect.

Lots of people, myself included, have struggled with thoughts of suicide. Regretfully in the folly of my youth I even had some attempts that thankfully failed. But; with the help of friends, family and some experts I've gotten to the point that while those thoughts still creep up unbidden now and then I'm strong enough to shove them aside. This haiku envisions the concept of suicide and self-inflicted death as a houseguest who has overstayed their welcome in my mind.

Invited before,
but be my guest no longer.
Now I am stronger.

Mocked, teased, sneered at, scorned
But people turn a blind eye
The madness must end
