First off, allow me to welcome you to the wonderful world of The Collective, congratulations to making the journey and for officially joining our fantastic community. This guide aims to give you the grand tour and hopefully answer the vast majority of questions you have about how things work here. If you get to the bottom of this post and still have a question, you are more than welcome to PM any member of staff for assistance.

The Rules
First things first. Our forum rules can be found here and are well worth a read, especially if you want to avoid a run-in with the RPC law.

Introduce Yourself
Now this is where you can introduce yourself to the unclean masses and have a look at our nice little staff profiles. Feel free to use the same template as we have or go wild and do your own thing. This is a great place to start and gives you the opportunity to get chatting with some of our lovely members.

Getting to Know the Community
The best places to jump right on into the social aspect of the site are Off-Topic Lounge, Games and Misc., our Guild Hall where you can discuss Games, Literature, Art and TV and Film, and, of course, our Shoutbox down there at the bottom of the board index page. We're a friendly bunch, really, I promise!

Roleplaying on RP Collective

(Welcome to The Multiverse)
On the face of it, RPC functions like many other multi-genre RP forums. Our approach, however, differs somewhat as our 'Persistent World' encompasses the whole forum. Whatever genre you wish to partake in, every world or realm you create or adopt for your own use forms part of The Multiverse. We have divided these countless realms into five different categories (explained below). Obviously there are sometimes going to be times where roleplays cover a multitude of different genres so please just choose whichever category you think fits best or ask a staff member for guidance.

For those of you that are new to forum roleplay or simply haven't encountered it in this form - the OOC part of the board is where people will often recruit for their RPs and where all subsequent out of character discussion takes place. It's a good place to look for an RP within any category that interests you.

Interest Checks and Brainstorming
Looking to develop an idea or try and gauge interest in a concept before committing to creating an official OOC? This section can be used to gather ideas and brainstorm with other members, recruit players, make partner requests, or just check for interest in an idea you have. A great place to browse to see what is taking place or build new settings and worlds from scratch.

Worlds of Magic: OOC | IC
These are realms that are largely dominated by magic. Have a traditional or modern fantasy RP? This is where it goes.

Worlds of Technology: OOC | IC
These are realms that are largely dominated by technology. This category is for science fiction, cyberpunk, steampunk and anything where technology plays a large part in the world you are playing in.

Worlds of Balance: OOC | IC
This is for realms where the magic and technology are well balanced or where both are downplayed for a more "realistic" setting.

Worlds of Realism: OOC | IC
The realms with realistic settings lacking the influence of magic and having technology more in line with our own world based on the time period.

The Arena: OOC | IC
Where characters can stretch their more combative muscles. Audiences are sometimes welcome too!

Private Roleplays: OOC |IC
This is the section of the forum for all 1x1 RPs (roleplays that have only two players involved) regardless of setting.

The Collective, the Ark and the Sanctum

More information about The Collective, The Ark and the Multiverse can be found here.

Your Forum Persona
A Forum Persona is akin to your playable character in a tabletop campaign and is often linked to the name or "persona" you naturally adopt for yourself when you join the forum. For many of us these characters have grown organically in areas such as the Shoutbox and have recently become a fundamental part of RP on the forum. If you require assistance in understanding or creating a forum persona please check out this thread in the Writer's Guild. Once you have created your Persona, post it here in the Member Files and you're ready to play!

The Collective and The Collective Ark
The Collective, as an IC entity, was born from the fact that members tended to adopt a certain Persona in the way in which they posted around the forum. Rather than continuing to allow this creative force to come to nothing, we designed an outlet for it and so Persona RP in the form of The Collective was born.

The Collective are a group of individuals who, either as a result of their own special abilities or exposure to an external force, have become free of the constraints of only having awareness of any one world, realm or 'verse and have, over the years, been brought together to form a trans-multiversal organisation known as The Collective. If you are interested in the origins of the Collective, Forge has kindly written this up for you here. The base of operations for this group is known as The Ark, a massive structure isolated in a dimension of its own and always roughly the size it needs to be. Within the Ark members of The Collective can find gateways allowing travel to almost any location throughout the multiverse as well as living quarters if they so choose to live onboard.

The Sanctum
The Sanctum is the nucleus of both the Ark and the Collective. A large, open space adaptable in size, shape and style dependent on the whims of its occupants. This is the central gathering point for members of the Collective and any favoured allies that have been permitted access to our headquarters. This is both the brain and heart of the Ark. A place where members can gather, socialise, scheme and plan any number of adventures or quests across the greater Multiverse. The outer rim of this space is littered with doors leading to long corridors which are, in turn, littered with doors leading to a huge multitudes of realms and pocket realms (staff-offices and individual member-rooms among them) linking the Ark and the Collective with the furthest reaches of the Multiverse.

The aim of this solely IC thread is for everyone to have the opportunity to take their Personas for a spin on a daily basis, to develop relationships (be they friendships, intense love stories or fierce rivalries) among characters and to act as a spring-board for a multitude of different RPs across the expansive Multiverse. Much like the existing SB, this space can be whatever your characters wish it to be at any point in time. Want a tree to sit in? Have at it. A pond to brood beside? Go right ahead. In keeping with the concept of this new, improved persistent world as a whole, we want this space to be open to creative interpretation

The Child-Boards
Member Files
This is where persona profiles are posted. Only one topic is permitted per persona.

People of Interest
For the following:
  • Character Archives: These should contain any characters that do not have an awareness of the wider Multiverse or the Collective. To put this in context, this will be any character that is only aware of the world in which they exist. These character profiles should be consolidated into one thread.
  • RP Character Archives: Having trouble keeping track of character sheets in an RP? You can post an Archive for characters linked to a specific RP here. These character profiles should be consolidated into one thread.
  • Secondary Characters/NPCs: Secondary Persona Characters or other characters with some link to or awareness of the Collective and wider Multiverse. (Cupid, Stanley the Bunny, Protagonists from the Forum War). Each of these characters get their own thread.
Collective Network
his board is for the profiles of any network or organisation that may be of interest to the Collective. Factions, groups, organisations - if there's a bunch of people operating together within the Multiverse, this is where we want to read all about them.

Collective Cartography
The Multiverse is composed of endless realms, worlds and dimensions. This is where the Collective store all of the information its members amass about the worlds they visit. Looking for a destination for you next adventure? Want to share information on a world you've recently visited? This is where to go.

After a good few years and many slightly different iterations of 'The Academy' and 'The Mentoring System', none of which have ever seen a great deal of success, we have decided to take a completely different approach, this time focused on collaboration, discussion and peer review in the hope that it encourages some healthy discussions about everything RP and writing related and also enables people to get 'real time' feedback on anything from a world you might be building to an RP post you're having trouble with without having to be dependent on whether or not an 'official' mentor is currently active.

Below is some more information regarding what this new board can be used for. For the time being we're going to avoid separating the board into child-boards but this is something we will happily revisit if board activity picks up.

Looking for Help
Need a proof reader? Want someone to look over an RP concept? Writing a novel and want someone to review a few chapters? Need someone to help you create an RP or perhaps this is your first time in this sort of writing environment and you're looking for someone to hold your hand through it? Throw up a thread letting the community know exactly what sort of assistance you're looking for. If you're feeling particularly brave, you can post whatever it is directly in the thread and allow the community as a whole to give feedback or you can simply ask for help and take the discussion itself to PM or whatever other medium suits you. How this works is entirely down to you.

Discussion and Debate
Have a writing related discussion you want to knock around with the community? Throw up a thread and get those mental juices flowing.

Tips and Guides
Created an RP Guide? Want to share your knowledge on writing combat scenes? Perhaps you've created a character development guide? Due to lack of activity, we've removed 'Open Seminars and Lectures' but if we get a decent influx of guides, we will create a specific section for them. Please tag with [Guide] and let a staff member know if you'd like the thread locked to prevent replies.

We absolutely love getting feedback on every aspect on the forum. All announcements relating to potential or enacted changes to the forum are posted in Member Notices, this is a great place to keep up to date on everything that's going on and is also where we'll post asking for feedback on certain ideas. Please don't be shy, we are all working towards making this place awesome for all of you and the more feedback we get, the better we can do that. We do ask that you keep it as constructive as possible.

For general questions, suggestions and feedback, this is the place to go. Once again, we really, really encourage our members to come to us with any thoughts they have on the forum. Alternatively, you are always more than welcome to PM any member of staff. We all have a pretty in-depth understanding of all elements of the forum and will be able to pass you on to the relevant staff member should anything more specific come up and we're all very happy to help!

With our tour coming to a close, I will leave you to explore the Collective on your own. There's still all manner of exciting aspects of the site for you to familiarise yourselves with including Original Works where you can post your poetry, prose, fan-fiction, character diaries or anything else you can think of, Contests and Events where you can pit your creative talents against that of your fellow members and the Guild Hall where you can discuss Gaming, TV and Film, Music, Literature and Art. So, with my job here having finally reached its conclusion, I once again extend you the warmest of welcomes and wish you luck on your Collective adventures!
