I'm sure a lot of you will have noticed that, of late, we've seen a significant decline in our number of staff members. Historically speaking, our community (here and on the old forum) have hired new staff members only very rarely and usually only as a reaction to having members step down. While that has worked for us and seen some awesome additions to the team over the years, it has its limitations and I think has probably deprived many deserving candidates of their shot at being part of the staff because they haven't been in the right place at the right time.
With that in mind, we're adopting a new and shiny 'always hiring' approach. This doesn't mean that we're going to hire every awesome member we come across until we have more staff than active members but it does mean that we'll be constantly on the look out for active, passionate, outgoing and welcoming members who we think could be a great asset to the team as we continue moving the forum forward.
What we're looking for
- First and foremost, we're looking for someone active. Our main priority for the team going forward is that it's made up of members that are active across a number of areas of the board. We don't care about post count or how often you share your thoughts or feelings, or how proficient you are in the various forum games, what we really care about is visibility. The more visible you are, the more accessible you'll seem to our member base and the stronger the forum becomes. This does mean, however, that if activity becomes an issue that we're planning to be proactive in swapping out inactive staff members to give more active candidates a shot - team communication will be absolutely key in that sense.
- Along the same vein, we're looking for people who are proactive. Welcoming members, plugging contests, creating RPs, joining member RPs, reminding people to vote, making new folks feel as welcome as humanly possible and all those other little things that help to make this community a great thing to be part of.
- Obviously, dealing with issues in a mature and reasonable fashion when they arise comes as part of the job. We're very fortunate that such occasions are rare here but we will be looking for someone we feel we could trust to deal with any conflicts of otherwise escalate an issue to someone who can.
- Last but not least, we're looking for someone who really wants to be a moderator. At the end of the day, however small it may seem in the grand scheme of life, this is a commitment in terms of time and energy and we really want people on board who want to be there.
