Things A Newbie Should Know!

Post by Ghorroj » Sun Nov 30, 2014 4:15 am

Aside from the obvious things (Where are my pants? What happens when I press this? Why does sticking my finger up my nose feel so good?) a forum newbie might want to ask questions. I intend this thread to be a quick rundown of things that newbies ask, and to be linked to if a newbie asks a question that has already been answered a billion trillion times before. Not everyone searches for the answers, after all.

Q: Hey! We were promised a shoutbox! Where's our shoutbox!?

A: Wow! This question is coming up a lot. Okay, the site is the absolutely newest incarnation of phpBB. That means that it's going to be a little while before we get a Shoutbox of our very own. Rest assured that as soon as one is available, we'll be getting it. In the meantime, I've had it implied to me that Shenanigans can go here. Yes, I know it's a thread called Shout Box, but it's visible on every forum, and people seem to have gravitated there. If there's serious discussion going on, you may need to tone down the Shenanigans because no-one likes to be interrupted by a roleplay shower of random fish when they're talking. Dammit.

Q: How do I set my age? I want to go into the Mature Forum to play.

A: Up in the top right-hand corner of the forum is your name in blue with a little downwards-pointing triangle next to it. Click this and, on the drop-down menu, click User Control Panel.

This takes you to the Overview panel. On the little window there, there should be tabs saying what each one is. you're looking for the Profile tab, which is right next to Overview. The first option, right at the top is Birthday. Put in what day, month and year you were born, then click Submit at the bottom. Ta-daa! Your age is set.

Q: Um... Mature forum..?

A: As with the last question, click on your blue name at the top, right-hand corner of the screen and choose User Control Panel. Remember those useful tabs? Find the one that says Usergroups, right next to Friends and Foes. Click it, and you'll see your Membership Options. Clicky the spot next to Mature Forum and click Submit. One of the mods will look at your application (when they can; be patient) and will either approve you, or ask for proof of your age. Remember to ask what constitutes acceptable proof, then provide it; if they're happy, they'll let you in.

Q: No, I mean... what is the Mature forum?

A: This is where grownup stuff happens. No, get your mind out the the gutter right now!. This is where you are expected to have more skill at roleplaying than the average player. You need to be able to write interesting posts, full of detail and complexity, and also be able to write a decent death scene. It's the one place on the forum where you're allowed to exceed PG-13 (or whatever rating it is in your piece of Somewhere Foreign) and cut loose. If you want action-packed scenes full of blood and gore, this is the place for it. Make sure you read all of the mature forum rules before posting!

Q: What features does this site have?

A: We have many, many features. Since this site is currently so new, we're finding more all the time as members explore. For a full list, go here. If you've found a feature that isn't listed, like a game that lets you hammer those pesky Helper Elves, do mention it in that thread.

Q: I have [some kind of issue], and it's really pissing me off. Can I get it fixed?

A: Sure! Note the problem here and one of the awesome admins will take care of it. It might take a little time for it to be sorted, but they'll be sure to tell you when it's fixed, or ask for more information. Sometimes it's not the site; sometimes it'll be that the cache of your browser needs clearing.

I appreciate the idea of this thread, Ghorroj. It should help a lot in these trying times so that people don't keep fumbling around. Keep it up!

I'd like to suggest one that a lot of people tend to forget. Not so much an FAQ as a frequently misunderstood part of roleplaying:

IC and OOC are separate. Just because my character hates / relentlessly pursues / yells at your character does not mean I hate you or your character. Always, always remember that there is a division between the character and the person playing that character.

I believe that is actually stated in the Roleplaying Etiquette part of the rules. Of course, if my memory is faulty and it isn't, we can certainly add it there.

Thanks so much for the set, Sammy!

This thread is intended more as a guide to the functions of the site, and to answer questions that the members and mods are tired of repeating the answers to. It's not supposed to be a guide to roleplay etiquette. I could probably link to an existing etiquette guide if it makes you happy, but I don't intend to add the rules of roleplaying here.

I just want to point out that you cannot do a gratuitous RP BDSM sex scene, even in the Mature Forum. I would have to re-classify the site, because that kind of writing constitutes pornography. If you want to do that, by all means. No judgement. You just can't do it here.

Actually... And in all fairness, everything you may need to know is in the FAQ and Latest Features threads which covers everything but I find members just don't bother to read because they think they'll lose their soul or something but it's actually really helpful stuff that someone's slaved over for ages to put together with quick links and everything. I would recommend anyone to just take the few seconds to click a link and if you're still baffled then by all means, my PM box is open.

I think the above links are well written and not at all soul destroying (as other site rules/clarifications can be). Whilst I am a newcomer (rather than transferring from another site as a fair number seem to be) I think it is important to establish a general tone for the site and have in place the procedures to deal with problems before they arise, as this protects everyone and (should) discourage the bad apples from getting into the RPG Collective barrel.

I know which bit you edited, too. If I'd seen the feedback earlier, I'd have edited it myself, so thanks for that. Not sure I'd have deleted the bit about not posting nuddy pictures in the Mature forum, though.

I imagine that sort of thing will be included in the mature section rules :). Feel free to add it back in if you like, though!

Thank you Dalfort... They were a bitch to put together and review by the mods, so I'm glad someone has read them.

It took me a while (Today) to figure out how to subscribe to threads(Many forums have this feature but its different for almost all of them), please add to this list: http://rpgcollective.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=15

It will prevent new members from forgetting about the rps they created and never log back in again. Maybe even make it a piece of advice 'Subscribe to your threads to keep track of responses'...sorta deal. Make it all spiffy like.

The official Newbie Guide is going to have a complete overhaul very soon to reflect new changes, I'll make sure that features.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

"Um... Mature forum..?" was so accurate to my current thought. I guess I got to add my age then.

Nuuu! This thread is old, old, old! It doesn't have any relevance to the forum anymore, so you should disregard it. The mature forum is an old idea that was carried over from the old board, but the admin decided that it wasn't necessary because people should be mature enough to police themselves.
