[Guide] The Traveller's Guide to the Multiverse

Post by Filth » Mon Apr 27, 2015 10:42 am

Image
This is just a beginner's guide to the RPGC Persistent world known primarily as the multiverse. This guide is by no means all-encompassing as the multiverse is a "vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big" place and we want to keep this as short and easy to read as possible. This guide will provide you with the basics in the hopes of helping you understand our persistent world so that you can confidently participate in all the fun if you so choose.

Any questions can be directed to the Help Console or to Filth, Forge or Sammy via PM.

What is the persistent world?
Rather than restricting members to a set of lands or singular world where our characters interact, our persistent world consists of every RP created on the forum and is referred to as the multiverse. At the core of the persistent world is The Collective and its headquarters/home on The Collective Ark.

Is participation in the Persistent world mandatory to RP on this forum?
Not at all.

What is the multiverse?
The multiverse is the term we use to refer to the collection of worlds, realms, and everything members create on the forum. Create a zombie RP or write a short story about a superhero and they're considered part of the multiverse just by way of existing on this forum. At the core of this concept are the more traditional aspects of a persistent world, Personas and The Collective. More information can be found below or by clicking here.

What is a persona?
A persona is essentially a member's main character on the forum and is based on how that member prefers to portray him or herself around the forum. This character is not restricted to any genre or setting, hailing from anywhere in the multiverse, and can be whatever the member wants. Persona's are the multiverse-traveling characters that can be members of The Collective. More information can be found below or by clicking here.

What are The Collective and The Collective Ark?
The Collective is an organization within the Multiverse of the persona's created by forum members. The Collective Ark serves as the home and/or headquarters for the persona's of both members and staff. The persona's of the staff make up The Collective's leadership but don't hold any real authority over the members actions safeguarding the Ark. More information can be found below or by clicking here.

Does the Persistent World have a Plot or Timeline I should know about?
The persistent world has no specific storyline or plot as it is made up of every world and role-play created on the forum. That said, The Collective will have it's own ongoing history and there will be opportunities driven by staff and members alike for you to use and develop your personas while contributing to our 'Collective' history.

What is the Multiverse? [extended]
The Multiverse is a collection of alternate universes, dimensions, planes of existence, etcetera. A large variety of these universes were originated from one another, some were created by powerful beings, some are created by time travel, and some just exist. There is no real correlation across the multiverse as far as time and space are concerned. Some parts of it can seem to be taking place in the past or future due to differences in how time passes in each universe and many don't exist in such a way that they could accurately be mapped out. The primary takeaway is that the multiverse is infinite and constantly expanding.

What are the "realms" of the multiverse?
The multiverse is considered to be made up of four "realms" as a way to categorize all worlds, dimensions, and universes within the multiverse as means of generating expectations on what a traveler might find there. The realm classifications are as follows:
  • Arcana Realms: These are the realms of the multiverse where the "aether" has manifested primarily as magic. The worlds within it are thus dominated by the presence of wizards, dragons, and other magical beings in both past, present, and (occasionally) futuristic settings.
  • Machina Realms: These are the realms of the Multiverse where the "aether" has inspired its inhabitants through knowledge and study to create things via the use of advanced technology. These worlds are thus dominated by the presence of technology (steampunk and sci-fiction for example) beyond what exists in our world regardless of the setting being considered a past, present, or futuristic world.
  • Statera Realms: These are the realms where magic and/or technology are present in such a way that neither truly dominates the world. On these worlds, powerful magic and super-science might exist in equal terms or be so minimal as to barely be beyond our own world like the presence of relatively minor differences (such as vampires existing and katanas actually being awesome).
  • Veritas: These are the realistic worlds lacking the influence of magic entirely and having technology more in line with our own world based on the time period. The worlds themselves may still be fictional or exist on an alternate timeline but generally reflect what one would expect to find on our own earth.
How do I make a setting I create part of the multiverse?
Every setting created for an RP and Original Work is considered part of the multiverse by default. These setting can be profiled in the Collective Cartography section of The Ark.

What if I don't want my world to be part of the multiverse?
Being part of the multiverse will in no way affect that setting outside of ways you choose so there's no reason to not be. However, if for some reason you don't want your setting to be considered part of the multiverse then just say so. However, this may cause some persona's to nudge the 4th wall a bit and ponder why a section of the multiverse has been blocked out.

Re: The Traveller's Guide to the Multiverse - Personas

What is a persona? [extended]
Personas come in all types but the primary connecting factor is typically the ability to travel the multiverse and some form of connection to The Collective.

Personas are essentially like your "signature" or primary character that members use to present themselves to the forum. Typically a member's persona shares the same name (or some similarity) member's username but this in by no means a rule. Since they're not tied to any one setting or RP you're free to create whatever interests you the most. To this extent, a persona often becomes a representation of the member (sometimes an exaggeration or even the exact opposite of the member IRL personality). It doesn't have to be a character you've RPed with a lot or anything like that for many members, their persona's just developed naturally as they found themselves interacting with other members on the forum. All that matters is that it's something you'll have fun playing.

Do personas have limits to their abilities?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Maybe. While there are no official rules about what Personas can and cannot do, it is worth remembering: Story = Conflict. Personas that are too powerful and/or capable of easily solving any issue thrown at them will be difficult, or downright impossible, to challenge. This makes such conflict difficult to keep interesting for everyone involved. Without getting too complicated, characters on par with your average superhero or weaker tend to be best.

Can I have more than one persona?
Yes and no. Keep in mind that your persona is meant to serve as your primary character in the ongoing story of the collective. Having more than one or constantly using different characters can complicate other members being certain who you are playing as and becoming familiar enough with your persona to recognize them when they show up to an RP or event. This is why personas are given a separate space for their character profiles from the standard characters used in any other RP. It is recommended members stick to one Persona at a time but feel free to alter, evolve, and retcon your persona as much as you want.

How do I make my persona a member of the Collective? Do I have to?
It is just assumed by default that your persona is a member of the collective but this is by no means a rule. It's entirely up to you.

Will my persona know X persona?
That's entirely up to you and whichever persona it is you are referring to. Some personas, such as those played by the staff, can be considered notable enough that your persona at least knows of them (if you so choose) just to give you some connections when joining in on whatever RP or event might be taking place. To create connections between your persona and others join in some RPs or discuss them with other members.

The Sanctum was created specifically to serve as a place to take your persona out for a test drive and introduce them to others.

What are The Collective and The Collective Ark? [extended]
The Collective is an organization within the Multiverse whose members consist of the persona's created by forum members and staff. Staff persona's serve as The Collective's leadership but don't hold any authority over their member's actions outside of what the members can and cannot do on the Ark.

The ark itself is a massive structure isolated in a dimension of its own and always roughly the size it needs to be. Within the ark members of The Collective can find gateways allowing travel to almost any location throughout the multiverse as well as living quarters if they so choose to live onboard.

What are the Ark living quarters like?
The living quarters, like the Sanctum, are capable of adapting to its resident desires. For example, one room might be built from medieval stone and look like the interior of a castle, while another might be a forest clearing that you always return to no matter how far you walk in any direction. The ark, however, is incapable of creating sentient objects so you would have to fill that forest clearing with your own animals.

What is The Sanctum?
The Sanctum is the nucleus of the expansive Collective Ark, a large open space adaptable in size, shape and style dependent on the whims of its occupants. This is the central gathering point for members of the Collective and any favoured allies that have been permitted access to our headquarters.

Are there any public areas on the Ark or areas that are off limits?
As of now, the only public area on the ark is The Sanctum. The remainder is considered off limits, typically for safety reason, or private quarters of members.

If a character can travel between realms, is that character required to use the ark's gateways?
Not at all. A lot of characters are capable of traveling between realms through some manner of magic or tech. However, when entering the ark members will always arrive through a gateway.

Where I can I find help with my persona or anything relating to the persistent world?
  • Visit our nifty Help Console, who will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
  • If you'd rather handle your query privately, you can send any member of the staff a message with your questions which, in turn, will help us improve and add to this guide. The information in this guide was primarily generated from questions asked by other members.
  • Another great resource is the Roleplay Academy where members can seek help and advice from other members on everything from creating a persona to creating worlds or anything else.
