Brother Bear has booked us in for a double screening thing for Force Awakens and Last Jedi on the 13th, so suppose I'll be going into work tired after this one.

New poster and trailer added. I've heard a lot of talk about how the trailer tries to Keyser Soze people, but trailers have been doing that since always. Not sure why people are surprised now.

eeeeeeeeeee i can't wait to see it a second time and process it more but yes, definitely in the loved it camp

Favorite moment is still when Laura Dern Did That™ but damn there were so many moments that were soooo good

I find it amusing that a lot of die hard Star Wars fans found it disappointing while all the regular movie goers seem to love it.

A couple of thoughts:
Leah not dying in the vacuum of space was crap.

And I wish Admiral Ackbar had been given Admiral Holdo's role, and Admiral Holdo not even be introduced.

Slightly agree on the first, definitely agree on the second;
Whilst Leah's space witch moment was more than a little overdone, it was nice to see some recognition of her as a powerful Force-sensitive. I'll agree that there were probably more delicate ways they could have handled it than blasting her into space only to have her miraculously fly to safety, but I can mostly overlook it in the long term. Ish.

Total agreement for not including Holdo, though. Entirely jarring to just throw this character in later on and expect her to be relevant to the audience. I'd have been more invested if it'd been an established character from the older movies, a la your Admiral Ackbar suggestion, or even just someone introduced earlier. As it was, I found that I didn't really care about her as a character.

I'm actually in a largely similar position when it comes to the whole casino side-quest. It all just felt a bit irrelevant, and if they'd introduced the code breaker in some other way I'd have happily seen the entire thing cut. Just felt like a slightly pointless tangent.

I'm willing to suspend disbelief on a lot of things when it comes to sci-fi, but the Force preventing the vacuum of space from killing someone, especially an unconscious someone, in seconds, isn't one of them.

And if Admiral Akbar had been the one to turn the ship around, and then General Hux or one of the other First Order officers on the bridge had whispered, "It's a trap..." just before getting wrecked, I would have wept happy tears.

Rion Johnson spends several lines of dialog with Luke and Leah trying to tell the main characters and the audience that "the hero always wins" is a stupid, ignorant, and dangerous way of thinking, and far more likely to get everyone killed. Then the story proves it by playing out the way the odds say it should. The dangerous, long-shot, half-baked plan fails miserably, and the consequence is that they lose, like, 20 of the 30 transport ships.

One of my favorite things about the film is that the first thing Luke does sets the stage for the rest of the movie. He tosses the lightsaber, and with it your expectations for whats about to happen in this plot.

Sorry, for clarity;
I don't object to them going off and doing their own thing. In fact, I'm all for it - heroes pursuing their own course is a staple of storytelling, so the base notion of them bucking authority and finding another solution is just fine. My problem was that the whole casino 'arc' was pretty elaborate, and filled with a lot of stuff that I'm not sure we actually needed to see. The Master Codebreaker turned out not to be relevant, and even less so when he had no connection to DJ and the whole eventual clusterfuck that occurred there. Releasing the space horses was cute, but something of a detour that told us very little about the characters that we couldn't have gleaned from their comments when they watched them being raced from the balcony. There were coins flying everywhere, and pointed comments about warmongerers, and kids living in the stables - but none of it really did anything that couldn't have been quickly and easily replaced.

Just my opinion, mind.
