100 Greatest Movies

Post by Sammy » Wed Aug 09, 2017 10:45 pm

... According to Empire.

Thought it'd be interesting to see how many of them we've all seen and whether or not you agree that they're good enough to make the list at all.

So a key for you!

Strike through - Seen it!
 - Deserves its place
 - Get it off

If you want to go so far as to say whether it deserves to be ranked higher or lower, feel free.

Re: 100 Greatest Movies

Post by Madrigal » Thu Aug 17, 2017 11:35 pm

Here is my list. On a side note, why is the only movie on this list made prior to the mid 1950's...Citizen Kane? There are some excellent films from the 30s and 40s that have been passed over. I may start a topic later where we can go over movies that deserve to be on this list.
100. Stand by Me (1986)
99. Raging Bull (1980)
98. Amélie (2001)
97. Titanic (1997)
96. Good Will Hunting (1997)
95. Arrival (2016)
94. Lost In Translation (2003)
93. The Princess Bride (1987)
92. The Terminator (1984)
91. The Prestige (2006)
90. No Country For Old Men (2007)
89. Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
88. The Exorcist (1973)
87. Predator (1987)
86. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989)
85. Léon (1994)
84. Rocky (1976)
83. True Romance (1993)
82. Some Like It Hot (1959)
81. The Social Network (2010)
80. Spirited Away (2001) A lot higher. Cartoons aren't just childish entertainment.
79. Captain America: Civil War (2016) A little higher.
78. Oldboy (2003)
77. Toy Story (1995)
76. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
75. Fargo (1996)
74. Mulholland Dr. (2001)
73. Seven Samurai (1954) A lot higher. The movie is tight, well told, and is by one of the best directors to work outside America.
72. Rear Window (1954)
71. Hot Fuzz (2007)
70. The Lion King (1994)
69. Singin’ In The Rain (1952)
68. Ghostbusters (1984)
67. Memento (2000)
66. Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi (1983)
65. Avengers Assemble (2012) Lower. The movie's good, but it has a kind of...manufactured quality to it. It lacks the genuine heart and vision of many movies that could never hope to get on this list.
64. L.A. Confidential (1997)
63. Donnie Darko (2001) I find this one pretentious, but I can't complain about the performances or cinematography, so in lieu of an actual objective protest, I'll just say its not for me.
62. La La Land (2016)
61. Forrest Gump (1994)
60. American Beauty (1999)
59. E.T. — The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) I think this one is overrated, but hey, its earned its place in history.
58. Inglourious Basterds (2009) Lower. Mindless violence is fun, but is it better than ET? Seven Samurai?
57. Whiplash (2014)
56. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
55. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
54. Vertigo (1958)
53. Psycho (1960)
52. Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)
51. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) From a Creative Commons staple to the ultimate holiday movie. This one mightn't be the best on the list here, but it probably has the single most interesting history of any movie here.
50. Lawrence Of Arabia (1962)
49. Trainspotting (1996)
48. The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
47. Interstellar (2014)
46. Citizen Kane (1941) Okay I haven't seen this one (just way too much to do), but Citizen Kane is held by many to be the best movie of all time. Why's it barely ahead of Interstellar? Can someone answer this for me? Anyone?
45. Drive (2011)
44. Gladiator (2000)
43. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
42. There Will Be Blood (2007)
41. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
40. 12 Angry Men (1957)
39. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
38. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) What a lovely day!
37. John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982)
36. The Departed (2006)
35. The Shining (1980)
34. Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)
33. Schindler’s List (1993)
32. The Usual Suspects (1995)
31. Taxi Driver (1976)
30. Seven (1995)
29. The Big Lebowski (1998) Lower. Its damn good, but is it really better than the Shining or Schindler's List?
28. Casablanca (1942) A lot higher.
27. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1966)
26. Heat (1995)
25. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
24. The Matrix (1999)
23. The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (2002) A little higher.
22. Apocalypse Now (1979)
21. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
20. Die Hard (1988)
19. Jurassic Park (1993)
18. Inception (2010)
17. Fight Club (1999)
16. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (2003)
15. Aliens (1986)
14. Alien (1979)
13. Blade Runner (1982)
12. The Godfather Part II (1974) Lower. Its very dramatic and rather good, but it doesn't flow as well as the original.
11. Back To The Future (1985)
10. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (2001)
9. Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (1977)
8. Jaws (1975)
7. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
6. GoodFellas (1990)
5. Pulp Fiction (1994)
4. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. The Dark Knight (2008) A little lower. Its a great movie, and I love the performances, but its not as good as some of the others here.
2. Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
1. The Godfather (1972)

Really think the second Godfather should at least be higher than the first. I watched the LoTR films when I was younger, but I'm pretty sure I didn't understand the lot of it at the time, so until I find the time to rewatch them, I'll consider them unwatched to me.

It's a cute list, though it's very, very Hollywood-centric. Where are the French films? And what about Almodovar, Tarkovsky, Bergman? Not hating on any of the ones mentioned (we're highly discouraged to do that as film students) but I think I can name a couple Bergmans worthy of being on the list to replace Avengers. Don't get me wrong. Civil War was good--Avengers was more a novelty than a technically good film.

Oh I quite agree. I may not be a film student, but my family is a very well-read and literate bunch, and their love for art extends to films. My father and mother used to sit down with us and watch some of the great classics of film. So when my father and I discussed this list, and I told him Predator placed on this list (over Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, Steamboat Willie, Seventh Seals or Wizard of Oz) he just laughed. Some of the films I just listed are still some of the highest grossing films (adjusted for inflation) of all time. Others had far reaching implications for film that is still felt for this day. Implications I feel some of the more recent ones lack. Does Avengers have the impact on film that earlier films did? I don't know, we haven't felt them yet. But we do know the impacts of Oz, Steamboat Willie and Gone with the Wind had on the industry. Predator certainly didn't have the same impact or artistic merits, even if its an excellent film.

As said in the opening post, it's from Empire (and if I remember correctly, based on a poll from Joe Public) so definitely very Hollywood focused. I think there was a second list from a poll of actual film-makers but I had to subscribe to have access to that one! There is a Directors' Top 100 from BFI that's quite well thought of though, might be worth a look as a comparison. It is from 2012, though.
