[Challenge] 52 Weeks, 52 Books - 2018

Post by Hades [Forge] » Wed Jan 03, 2018 9:32 pm

Alright, kids - Sammy's off on an adventure at the moment, so I've seized the responsibility (and the glory I hope) that comes with welcoming in our third year of the 52 Weeks, 52 Books Challenge!

The 52 What Now?
Think of it as a New Year's Resolution with a difference; rather than challenging yourself to eat less sugar, or drink less booze, the aim is to get yourself reading on a regular basis. The 'standard' goal is to fit 52 books into your year - that's a book a week - but the actual number that you settle on can be whatever you want. It's a personal thing, and ultimately the aim is to keep you reading, not stress you out by setting impossible goals.

Why, though?
Reading is fun! It's also been linked to memory improvement, development of analytical thinking, improving focus and concentration, stress reduction and better writing skills! More than anything, in a world where we're all constantly subject to demands and responsibilities from every corner, it's a chance to unwind and share a little of what we enjoy with our peers.

Awesome! What do I need to do?
Glad you asked, disembodied voice that totally isn't me talking to myself! In this thread you can post a list of the books you've read on a month-by-month basis, with an note on what your overall target is. Any book counts, be it fiction or non-fiction. You can talk about the things you've enjoyed or hated, your frustrations, what helps you fit books in, what you'd recommend or have tried from other people's lists - the sky's the limit. You could also consider joining Goodreads, which lets you track the books you've read over the year and which has a 2018 Reading Challenge that you can customise to suit yourself! It's not mandatory, but it's a nice little extra.

As before, post your lists and I'll put a link to them below;
A quick poke for two folk I know are interested in this;

This actually sounds like a decent way to help we read the books I currently own. I'm the type to buy a book and never actually get around to reading it's contents -- which is incredible frustrating! Well, here's my list! Wish me luck!
---
Jinx's Reading List 2018

Goal(s):
  • 1 book per week.
  • And if not that? 2 books a month.
List Code:
  • = Book is not complete.
  • = Book is completed.
  • = Will more than likely appear next to the title and means the book is online.

January
  • Driving Over Lemons - An Optimist in Andalusia. Book I by Chris Stewart.

Misc Queue.

The Call Of Cthulhu By H.P Lovecraft.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth By H.P Lovecraft.
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Stardust By Neil Gaiman.
The Fault In Our Stars By John Green.
Coming Up For Air By George Orwell.
And it was all yellow.

The fact that every book reading session so far this year has been followed by a day of awful migraines is really messing me up for January.

Moving on to book six. Oath of Dogs was.. weird. Like, 25% of it was an interesting concept about psycho-evolution on an alien world, which was unfortunately nested within 75% of a flat protagonist and her assistance dog running around being anxious about things. Glad to be moving on.

With the (almost) end of January upon us, I've not read a single book in its entirety. Book slumps are the absolute worst.

I'm hoping that February will prove to be a more productive month, despite how short it is.

Nine for January, and about to finish the first book of February. Which is good progress. Better than last year. See if I can keep it up.

So much to do, so little time!

I refuse not to smash this for the third year in a row. Need to start factoring reading back into my daily life without letting it take over. Time management really isn't a skill of mine.

Still 5 books behind schedule at this point, but I'm hoping that March will be better~
Just finding concentration to be something I am lacking nowadays.

After I-don't-even-know-how-long of having just no motivation to pick up a book, I finally forced myself to pick up my Kindle and just start something. Unsurprisingly, as soon as I was past the first few pages, all of that weird reluctance was gone. Why are brains so weird?

Anyhoo, I have some catching up to do!
