[Challenge] 52 Weeks, 52 Books - 2017 [Finished]

That's right, folks, we're back for round 2! Last year is the first time I can think of where I've set myself a new year's resolution/goal and stuck at it right to the very end and I'm honestly not sure I could have done it without the sort of sense of accountability (and encouragement) that came with last year's challenge. Rather than moping my brow, patting myself on the back for a job well done and moving on to a new task... I've decided this is something I want to keep up year on year. Reading makes my brain work better both on an intellectual and a creative level and, honestly, it makes me happy. I think we all need our escapes and, for me, devouring words in the best one there is.

So... once again! I invite you to join me on this year long challenge. As before, 52 is just the number I've chosen for myself. Feel free to aim higher, aim lower or just attempt to read as many books as you can!

As before, post your lists below and I'll aim to link to them below.

I feel like my January progress is being hampered by my addiction to Disney Emoji Blitz. :xeyes:

Over halfway through book 1 but could do with picking up the pace for a stronger/more comfortable start.

First book down, something I've been meaning to read for years and years. Seem to be on a bit of a dystopian theme at the moment.

They're not bad, but there's a couple of things that make them a bit of an uphill effort. They're a little dated, for one, and if you read a lot of more-recently-published fantasy (which was 90% of my 2016 reading) then they're definitely a little jarring. The thing that's bugging me most about them is the use of unnecessary dialogue, though. Sapkowski frequently writes conversations the way they might happen in the real world, and as nice as that is, it doesn't work so well on the page. So you end up with conversations like;
"Geralt, won't you come in?"
"I'm here on business. I need Item A."
"Oh come now, surely you have time for tea with an old friend?"
"Tea, then, I can manage - I've traveled far, and refreshment would be welcome. I question your use of the word friend, though, for you and I have always been men for whom mutual business is key."
"Ah, I knew you would want tea. You've always enjoyed it."
"This is true."
"And as to your assertion that we are not friends, I must disagree. What could be more friendly than two men cooperating with one another?"
"There is more to friendship than that, and you and I do not have it."
"Ah, so you say. We shall have to agree to disagree, then. Drink your tea."
"It's good tea."
"That it is."
"Anyway, we are getting off of the point."
There's a couple of pages in Blood of Elves that are like that, where three of them just sit down to do something like eat a fish and wax lyrical about how things have been recently. It really interrupts the flow of the narrative. So while the books are still enjoyable, it's hard to keep that sense of investment going continuously.

That, and his persistent habit of having people talk to one another in Elder Speech and never explaining what was said or if it was relevant.

Off to an incredibly slow start but picking up the pace. Taken me about a week to finish the last fifth of Monstress and certainly not for a lack of interest.

Seven for January, which is slower than last year. Starting February with something other than a Witcher novel, at last.

Back to Hyperion for me. If work continues to be this dead it's going to be a busy few weeks for me book-wise.

Touch wood.
