Fire & Ice by Patty Jansen. New rule. Never read anything with an '&' in the title.

I have, at long last, started in on Robert Caro's award-winning, multi-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson. Super excited to dig into it.

Update: Yep, it was phenomenal. Already begun ordering the rest of the series. For the time being, to get back into the swing of fiction, I'm getting into Andy Weir's 'Artemis'. Seven pages in, it smacks a little too heavily of YA for me, and the prose is pretty weak--
'Well, if it isn't Jazz Bashara!' said a nearby asshole. He acted like we were friends. We weren't friends.

'Dale,' I said. I kept walking.

He hurried to catch up. 'Must be a cargo ship coming in. Nothing else gets your lazy ass in uniform.'

'Hey, remember that time I gave a shit about what you have to say? Oh wait, my mistake. That never happened.'
Yep. Kind of a bummer, since it was nice to encounter some science fiction with a female Middle Eastern protagonist, but I guess I'll stick with it and see if it improves.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I'm around the halfway mark, and the prose and characters have had me since the first page.

Children's books, apparently. But thoroughly enjoying them anyway.

We are the Wolf by Toby Neighbors. So, so achingly boring. Kill me now.

I don't know. *flails*
The book I was reading is just not capturing my attention right now, and I have no money to spare for the book club at the moment.

This.

And also, an update having finished The Thirteenth Tale mentioned above. This is truly a book for book-lovers. A haunting tale I'm still thinking about. Setterfield is perfect in her management of information she gives the reader. I'd recommend it highly.

Currently reading Chris Moriarty's 'Spin State'.

It's not too bad. Flawed, but it's kept me reading. But man, one of the characters is just rubbing me the wrong way in every possible manner and every sentence involving him makes me want to put the book down more and more. If this one uniquely obnoxious character weren't in the story, I'd be enjoying it a lot more.

Well... finished it.

To sum up my sentiments: somebody once said that you can judge the success of a president by whether or not they were able to convince the voters to give them a second term. And if, by similar logic, you can determine the worth of a book by whether or not it's able to convince you to pick up its sequel, Spin State dropped the ball. I've read books that left me with a sense of annoyance, or of disappointment, but rarely have I come away from a book with a sense that it imparted nothing at all.

I just finished Mud Vein by Tarryn Fisher.

While it wasn't the most well-crafted novel I've ever read, it was engaging and a thrill ride. My heart is broken and my head is spinning and all I want is for someone else to talk to about this.

Trying to trudge through The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. The writing style is just not my cup of tea. So disappointed, was really expecting to love it.
