A Wistful Day Continues (1x1)

Old IC: http://rpgforumsonline.com/forum/viewto ... sc&start=0

Today has proven a very strange day. After a strange alien ship crashed landed due to a 'minor malfunction' when the engines of the ship fell off, the alien android Wynne has encountered the Mother Unit Sera and her guardian Beta, as well as the robotic defender of Earth known as Paragon. After Beta's kidnapping via robotic tiger samurai, the three followed her abductor to the secret base of the insidiously childish psychic Cynthia Hall. After fighting his way inside, the boy robot Paragon has succeeded in freeing Beta, before they were again separated, with Beta now locked in the bowels of ARC Tower. Wynne and Sera on the other hand, have remained behind at Lady Cynthia's lair, before their capture by Cynthia's Dolls, telepathic thralls that patrol her inner sanctum. Now alone in the crazed psychic's clutches, their fate is now subject to the girl's whims, while their would-be protectors wait for Lieutenant General Fletcher to free the now imprisoned Beta. Will they find their way to freedom? Will the four meet again? Or will the whimsy of fate that pushed them together continue to hold the four friends apart?

Wynne & Sera

Sera gave a bright, flattering smile. "I just wanted to know who I shouldn't mess with!" The flatterer.

"If you wanted to know that, you could've just asked before you and that stupid jerk showed up and ruined my doll house."

The 'doll' gave a tearful sniff, made all the more unnerving by the lack of any emotion on her face. She was silent for a moment or two, her face slowly turning forward as she strummed her shamisen. The two Redcoats holding Sera did not loosen their grip, or indeed make any move at all. The room was awkwardly silent for several minutes, save for the sound of the shamisen. Though the telepath seemed to have left for the time being, it seemed she had no intention of letting the Mother Unit go.

Beta & Paragon

"Hi to Sabre," Beta obediently repeated with no expression on her face to suggest it had been intended to be sarcastic or rude. "Unit Paragon served as an escort to guide me out of the enemy facility. At a proper altitude, he offered the UNARC teleportation network as a prompt and alternative egress to proceeding through an armed and alerted facility. As the most efficient and expeditious method to accomplish the objective, I accepted the offer and the teleportation network deposited me here."

Sabre gave a derisive breath from her nose, clearly amused by Beta’s response. One foot swept slightly to the left, allowing her to take a more informal, though still rigid, stance. Her sharp eyes locked onto Beta over her crossed arms, giving her something akin to a glare.

“Of course you were deposited here. We intercepted you when IRIS beamed you up, and had you redirected down here. All unidentified androids are sent here first. Especially Zeta-classes.” She glanced over at Melody with a stern look on her face. “You really need to remind your brother of that fact. We have procedures for a reason.”

“Mehmehmeeeh.” Melody muttered under her breath, just low enough to keep the combat unit behind her from noticing. Her silver hand rose, mimicking Sabre’s mouth movement. She turned to Sabre, her arms crossing to match Sabre’s. “Say whatever you want, poster girl, but Paragon says she wrecked half of one of Cynthia’s bases. That makes her okay in my books. Besides, Paragon never brings friends home. We should be encouraging him to meet more people!”

“I don’t object to the...boy bringing friends back to the base.” Sabre said. Though she was speaking to Melody, she eyed Beta critically as she addressed the mechanic. “I just wish he had better taste in the friends he chooses to invite here.”

Wynne & Sera

"Ah ..." the girl answered, testing the grip of the redcoats with gentle tugs of her wrists. "And I suppose it wouldn't do any good to point out I personally inflicted no harm upon your doll house and encouraged the stupid jerk not to do so?"

Beta & Paragon

The red android within the force field watched the discussion going back and forth. It had little to do with her, given that they were no longer talking to her, but if these proceedings had any influence at the rate of decision making and the final outcome of that process of the Lieutenant General, it behooved her to accelerate it.

"Lacking schematics of the facility," she voiced, "I cannot speak to the percentage of the superstructure that was damaged, but a claim of fifty percent is unlikely. My egress was as linear as was possible with the information available." Her gaze went directly to Melody. "Also, while my systems indicate I should possess at least basic psychological projection matrices that do not appear to be active, Unit Designate Sabre is clearly a combat mechaniloid. Tactically speaking, elucidating my capacity for the destruction of military installations would most likely only discourage her from supporting my release."

Wynne & Sera

The wrists of Sera’s captors proved strong yet unyielding against her efforts to test their strength. Though her captors remained emotionless as she tried to do so, her efforts evidently did not go unnoticed by their mistress. The woman before Sera frowned, pulling a paper fan from her belt and striking Sera on the top of the head with the device, as though irritated by her thoughts of freedom.

“Stop that! Those Redcoats are in mint condition, and you’re creasing their sleeves!”

Beta & Paragon

“Don’t be silly. I’m sure Sabre sees your efforts against our common enemy as a sign of goodwill from you. Don’t you Sabre?”

“No.”

“She might even be so moved she’ll take your case to the Lieutenant General personally. Won’t you Sabre?”

“No.”

“And even if all hope is lost, and you’re condemned to spend the rest of your life here in this prison, Sabre will at least recognize the value of your friendship, and see you as a kindred soul in the eternal war against evil and tyranny. Couldn’t you Sabre?”

Sabre opened her mouth to speak, before the security door on the opposite side of the room opened, exposing a single man who strolled into the room. He wore the uniform of an Air Force general, save for his jacket, which he had replaced with a leather pilot’s jacket, which hung airily from one crooked index finger over one shoulder. His combat boots were likewise out of place, replaced with a pair of fine leather shoes. He had short brunette hair, and an airy, irreverent look to his face, as though he didn’t consider running the world’s premier peacekeeping organization cause for stress. Indeed, he carried no weapon Beta could see, other than a plasma pistol kept in the side of his belt. The sound of metallic footsteps hurried after him as Paragon followed after him, pushing two fingers against each other as he gazed nervously after his commander. Sabre sidestepped as the man stepped past. One hand drifted to her weapon’s hilt as he stepped by her.

“Lieutenant General Fletcher, I would advise keeping your distance from the Zeta. We--”

“Thank you, Colonel, your objections have been noted.”

The man continued to the edge of the Colander, ignoring the three androids behind him. Sabre’s feet were spread, one hand on her weapon as though expecting Beta to lunge at the barrier. Melody on the other hand looked perfectly calm, giving Beta a comforting smile. Paragon merely gazed sympathetically past the others, not sure what to hope at the assembly before him. General Fletcher gazed down before bending at the knees, crouching down to meet her at eye level.

“...”He silently gazed for a moment or two before brushing his chin with one hand. “Right. First question. Are you friendly?”

Sera & Wynne

"Sorry!" Sera replied quickly. "I was trying to be gentle. I was just being thorough is all. Honestly, all we wanted to do is see more of the outfits and decorations you have. They're really something!"

Beta & Paragon

The armed and armored girl inside the barrier watched the proceedings as the newcomer arrived and knelt down to speak to her, completely ignoring the reassuring smile of Melody, the preparations for violence Sabre made, or Paragon's nervous, apologetic empathy. Her expression was still completely bland even as she focused on Fletcher as he asked his question and as she answered.

"I am neutral," she replied clearly, "but my combat protocols are currently on high priority in response to a registered threat to my hardform's continued operation. I am currently kept safe from assault by the energy field present because none of the weapons present are capable of penetrating it, but should any more pressing threat manifest itself, the heightened priority will necessitate defensive reciprocation."

Wynne & Sera

The Geisha 'doll' seemed to blink at that, evidently taken aback by the idea her captive would be so taken with the young girl’s hard work. It was another couple moments before the doll spoke again, an enthusiastic smile warping her face. It was eerie, seeing this smile curve around her face, the rest of her face showing no signs of joy. No playful glint in her eyes, or gentle indentations in her upper cheeks. Only that smile...

“Why, thank you...jerk. Ooh! I know! Why don’t my Redcoat dollies there take you on a little tour, and you can see more of my Dollhouse for yourself?”

Beta & Paragon

“That sounds like a very roundabout way of saying ‘no’, if we let you out.”

The Lieutenant General glanced back at the three androids behind him. Sabre and Melody seem to have shifted very little, though Paragon was looking away, with sad, sympathetic eyes. The General turned back to Beta, staring her dead in the eyes.

“Question two. Are you friends with Paragon over there?”

Wynne & Sera

Sera's face lit up at that. "Oh, that sounds wonderful!" She turned her head as far as she could toward Wynne. "Doesn't that sound great, Wynne? A proper tour!"

Beta & Paragon

Beta glanced to the referenced android when asked. "System records indicate the indicated unit was accompanying myself and Mother Unit Sera, but there is nothing on my internal records that I can access of personal interaction with it prior to locating it within the underground facility. It may be noteworthy that my internal records seem to be in error, as I cannot access historical data locally earlier than approximately fifteen minutes previous, when my combat protocols are indicated to have been given priority."

She turned back to the general. "However, you are also in error. My answer to your previous answer was not that I would be hostile if released. It was that I would be hostile toward any units, carbon or mechanical, that attempted violence upon my hardform. I cannot do otherwise. While combat protocols are prioritized, the preservation of my hardform is the highest objective. It is the same objective that is determining whether or not to answer your questions. You would not normally have the access rights to any local system errors experienced by a Purifier unit, to examine or perform maintenance on the hardform of a Purifier unit, or to information regarding the System or the status or location of a Mother Unit. However, situational analysis indicates that cooperation in this regard may accelerate my release and ensure my safety. Furthermore, the engineering unit designated Melody may prove vital to ensuring the aforementioned errors are not an indication of greater hardform or firmware damage."

Wynne & Sera

“Put me down, you overgrown lobster!” Wynne shouted, completely ignorant of Sera’s words as she swung about from the fabric of the small of her shoulder, where she hung from the soldier’s hand like an unfortunate human yo-yo. She swung her fists about futilely, doing her damnedest to knock the block off the limey’s kneecaps, even as she spun about from where she hung. “Just wait until I get loose! I’ll sic Mother on you! She’ll eat you up, and pick the seeds out of her teeth, or whatever you Squishies have inside you!”

The Geisha lay aside her shamisen, before pointing towards the door. The soldiers silently turned around, still holding their two captives before silently marching out of the room. The group was silent save for their marching and Wynne’s attempts at protest. The long lines of doors seemed to pass them for several minutes. There were no markings, plaques or even variation in color when it came to the doors. It was a wonder Cynthia and her thralls could remember their way about this place.

Sera’s thoughts were interrupted when the group came to a halt. Wynne had ceased her thrashing, in favor of grumpily crossing her arms as she bobbed from the nape of her own clothing. The lead Redcoat extended one hand, opening the door to reveal a darkened room. He stepped aside, allowing the soldier behind him to grasp Sera by the back of her clothing and silently throw her into the darkness beyond, followed swiftly by Wynne. The Mother Unit bounced against the hard floor, before the open doorway behind her slammed shut. It was a second or two before the lights flickered on, and Sera could grasp where she was. A long hallway proceeded before her, thin wooden doors designed more for privacy than security lining the way. The two doors nearest her were open, signs on them reading “Poopyhead A” and “Poopyhead B” in a child’s scrawl. Nearby, Wynne lay silently on her stomach, eyes tightly shut and hands over her ears, a strange serene look over her face as she blocked out the world. Evidently she was not quite ready to return to the real world. A harsh drone from a nearby loudspeaker however quickly interrupted this bizarre form of meditation.

“Attention Poopyheads. Before your grand tour of Lady Cynthia’s Marvelous Mansion of Dollies, you are in need of a change of clothing, to better appreciate the art and majesty of the world that awaits you. Poopyhead A--yes you!--your clothes are in Changing Room A. Please proceed there and change...or I won’t let you back out. Poopyhead B, into Changing Room B.”

Wynne’s face collapsed against the carpet, hands going over her head in a futile effort to comfort herself. After a moment or two however she seemed to find the energy to push herself up and walked dejectedly into Changing Room B, closing the door behind her. Sera did likewise into her own room, and found herself in a rather odd changing room indeed. The room itself was very well furnished, sporting a small antique table and a small table. Placed on this table was an outfit made of gold and silk, in three pieces. The top item was a coronet of sorts, made of golden metal and set with gemstones in a handful of key places. The device seemed to expand and retract as she brought it closer to her head, perhaps modifying its size to better fit the Mother Unit’s head. The second item was a top, also with a plate of golden metal to fit beneath the neck. The center of this plate gave way to a small V space between the fabric, which was set with gems in Middle Eastern styles. The last item was a simple golden belt, long trains of silk hanging down along its edges, two breaks in the elegant fabric allowing her to easily move her legs. Whatever thoughts were drifting through Sera’s head however was interrupted by a screech from the next room.

“What is this thing? Do squishies here wear this? And why is it so furry?”

Beta & Paragon

“Uhuh. And if you were in a giant building filled with several hundred people--human and android--and your predecessor had a Zeta class running through the building redecorating the place, you’d take that as a ‘no’ too.”

The general stared at the Edenite for a few moments before eventually standing and turning. He paused by Paragon, giving the boy’s brown hair a light ruffle. “Sorry kiddo. Your friend stays in the Colander. For now.”

“B-but...” A look of panic entered the boy’s eyes. “You aren’t going to--”

“Operation Suncatcher may be standard procedure for any active and hostile Zeta class, Paragon. But as I see it, she isn’t actively aggressive. She’ll stay in the Colander for three days. If there’s no improvement and no one comes for her, Suncatcher will be a go.”

The boy’s shoulders slumped and he looked down at his feet, evidently upset at this verdict. His ‘sister’, Melody, looked sympathetically after him. Ever since he had first joined their family, she had done her best to treat him just like she did her other brothers, but as time passed, he had gradually become her favorite. There was an earnestness and an innocence to the boy that made life seem brighter. To see him so upset over an honest attempt to help a friend...it felt like something warm in her was fading.

So, it was decided.

“General, sir.” She took in a breath, standing at attention, or what she imagined what might be taken for her standing at attention. “Requesting permission to be sent into the Colander, sir.”

“Melody...”

“I was built as a freshman year prototype by my father, who re-engineered me to operate as his assistant. I have worked on over two hundred models of robot--drone, master and special--to date, and have never heard a complaint against my skill with a wrench.”

“Melody--”

“After ARC’s inauguration, I joined on as Team Elite Mechanic--passing up two VERY nice gigs as assistant professor at two local colleges teaching advanced mechanics--in order to assist my more combat-oriented siblings, and have regularly been called to perform numerous jobs outside my--”

MELODY! So kind of you to volunteer, I was just about to ask you if you’d be willing to take a look at our visitor.”

“Great.” The purple shirt and jean-clad android said with a smile. “Beam me up Iris!”

Thrusting one of her fresh cookies to the sky, the android was struck with a beam of light, rapidly reordering her atomic structure, breaking it down, and transforming it into energy in a mere second. It was perhaps another three seconds before she rematerialized in the bowl of the Colander, giving herself a brief stretch. She turned to Beta, giving her a friendly smile as she strolled in arms reach of the Zeta Class.

“Heya. Don’t mind the General, he’s under a lot of stress.” Melody held up her cookie, offering it to Beta as he other hand rested on her hip, just above where her wrench hung in her utility belt. “Alright, you munch down on this and Melody will get to work. Now show me where it hurts.”

Sera & Wynne

"Mine's not furry at all!" Sera called over to Wynne as she enthusiastically examined the outfit. "It's pretty!" She giggled as she played with the size-changing hat. "And one size really does fit all!"

She set the articles back down and unsealed her Edenite robe, following it with the rest of her personal clothing before setting about donning the Middle Eastern inspired outfit.

Beta & Paragon

Beta gave the cookie a cursory, dismissive glance. "My energy generation system does not require nutrient-based fuel." Apparently, however, that did not mean it didn't support it, because at the same time, the child's stomach gave a terrific rumbling triggered by the aroma. Not that she seemed to hear it. In fact, her expression and posture was as if it hadn't occurred at all.

Sera & Wynne

The Edenite quickly changed into the costume on the table nearby. The clothes were easy to don, the belts, bands and ties almost fitting themselves as she pulled them on as the material constricted itself to her body. A mirror propped against the wall caught her attention, reflecting her image. Blue silk and golden thread stood stark against her olive skin. Golden bands hung limply from her wrist and ankles, embellishments hanging from her top over her exposed midriff. The coronet atop her head on the other hand lent her an oddly authoritative look, as though she were some djinn awakened from her millennia long slumber. Opening the door, Sera tread outside on her bare feet, and almost into where Wynne was standing.

The girl was dressed in a 1920’s style flapper dress, a cap pulled jauntily over the side of her head. The girl gave little attention to her clothing however, seeming instead to take more interest in a fox pelt mean to serve as a scarf. At least, that’s what Sera presumed it was. It seemed to be missing its head, marked instead by what looked like plasma burns. Wynne turned from where she was moving to prod the thing in her hand, giving Sera a friendly wave.

“I found this animal in the changing room.” The alien girl paused, before gently moving a finger towards her cape, pausing as though frightened that it might lunge out at her. “I think it’s dead…”

Beta & Paragon

Melody just gave her a playful smile, brushing the top of the Edenite’s head playfully. Her hand lowered, taking hold of the outside of Beta’s hand, placing the delicious looking cookie in her hand, a train of chocolate briefly connecting to Melody’s thumb.

“Here, hold onto it.” The mechanic raised her hand to her mouth, suckling the chocolate off her finger before reaching her hand down to her belt. “Now, hold still and let Doctor Melody look you over.”

Her larger hand extended towards Beta’s head, pausing about a foot from the Edenite’s skull before a gem-like device at the center of the hand seemed to glow with blue light. A holographic light glowered further up her arm, a window appearing just before Melody’s face, showing diagnostics, x-rays and various conjectures and assumptions on Beta’s physical form and power source. Melody turned her head as she examined the data, giving Beta a pleasant smile through the holographic projection.

“So, how did you and Para end up making enemies of Cynthia Hall?”

Sera & Wynne

Sera needed to only give it a cursory glance, enjoying the jingling of her outfit's bangles as she did so. "Oh, it's quite dead," she provided and motioned around her neck. "You're supposed to wear it like a scarf, it's part of the era's style. The 1920s were an incredibly barbaric time in the 20th century for the Carbons. All shooting and killing and drowning each other in the river."

As she turned away, Wynne might've thought she'd almost heard something about smashing mirrors, but before it could be confirmed, Sera gave a little twirl to show off her own outfit, striking a pose at the end with one knee up and the other leg on her toes, front arm waist high and curled up while the back arm (both relative to Wynne) stretched up above her. "So! How's mine? I like it!"

Beta & Paragon

The child had held the cookie as bidden and stood stock still as she had been told to do. The scan actually had quite a bit of difficulty piercing her internal workings. It guessed the frame easily enough, a very close facsimile of a human skeleton, except incredibly dense. Far denser than known Terran materials could provide. If all Edenites, including the previous visitor to the Colander, had such frames and yet could remain so light on their feet, it went a long way to explaining their physical toughness relative to Terran androids. Musculature was even vaguer, however, and beyond that it all seemed to be attached appropriately (again nearly perfectly replicating the musculature of a human, and any variations closer to improvements than failures to exactly duplicate it), Melody could distinguish little about it. The child's power system was a complete mystery, stored somewhere inside the body, but nowhere clearly definite. A decentralized system, perhaps. At most, her scans could only determine that the child ran on plasma, but this was from "fringe flickers," excess energy "lost" as it flows through outermost systems, common to any and all energy systems, both natural and artificial.

However, attempting to extrapolate the level of power generated by her power systems from the strength of these fringe flickers relative to those of UNARC androids would most likely lead her to assume an error in the guesswork. The idea that enough power to fuel the entire Colander at full power and another dozen combat androids besides could be generated from a diffused system inside such a small body surely had to be a mistake.

"I cannot speak for the unit Paragon," Beta replied neutrally when Melody struck up conversation. "The dialogue recorded from the base's communication speakers indicates they have prior interactions I am not privy to. However, she apparently blames me for damage to a public facility. I have no recollection of such an event, and while the System confirms that the damage did occur, records indicate the damage was due to an extraterrestrial impact prior to the arrival of myself and Mother Unit Sera to the scene."

Wynne & Sera

Wynne’s memory banks were straining as she watched Sera strike a pose, reminding her that costumes like this were designed to bedazzle. That to be taken in by something so obvious a ruse was very unbecoming of an agent of the Ancient Ones, and that she should remain polite but aloof. That she was not ‘A primitive-minded nincompoop with the brain of a flightless bird.’ But still, she couldn’t keep herself from openly gaping as the bright metal caught in the luminescent light.

“Its beautiful...” She whispered. The alien android stared for a moment or two more, before a pout-like expression crossed her face.

“Why do you get the shiny’s? The only shiny I have is this one.”

She reached down to her side, before raising a polished steel flask, the remains of some liquid or other sloshing about inside. The girl screwed open the top before giving it a sniff, muttering something about how it ‘smelled like open fuel cells’, before the sound of an explosion seemed to rock the facility. A klaxon wailed somewhere in the building, moments before the security doors slid shut behind them, slamming down with a steely thud. Wynne turned, scratching at the top of her ear just beneath the fringe of her hat. She walked slowly to the door, feeling around the smooth surface for some kind of handle, before meekly pulling at the edge of the door. After a couple moments of effort, she seemed to give up with a sigh, turning back to Sera.

“Well, it looks like we’re locked in. So we could...sit around and talk about girl things. Like boys. Boys are a thing girls talk about, right? I hear girls like them. Tell me about all the ones you have. I’ve got dozens! I keep them on my...living room bookshelf...next to my record player...”

Beta & Paragon

“I see...”

The girl in the purple shirt continued holding up her arm for a moment or two more, before slowly lowering it, the holographic displays shutting down. She crouched down to Beta’s level, giving her a kindly look.

“Alright dear. Now next, I need to open up your chest and head cavities for me to take a look. I need to make sure nothing’s amiss.” She turned to the group of soldiers and androids outside. “Turn around.”

“...Uhh...” The commander blinked, evidently not quite sure what to make of the request. “...Why do--”

“I’m not asking her to expose her inner workings in front of two dozen strangers, general.” Melody said, stepping between Beta and the crowd of soldiers outside as she crossed her arms. “Either everyone turns around, or you bring me a sheet.”

Paragon seemed to let out a frightened sort of squeak, his hands immediately rising to cover his eyes as he turned around. The soldiers held their positions, though occasionally one or two would glance uncertainly to their commander. General Fletcher tried to match Melody’s crossed arms and grim stare, though his expression soon shifted from command to concern just before a loud resounding clang rang through the room.

Sera & Wynne

Sera grinned at the revelation of the flask, suppressing a snicker, and was probably about to explain what it was to the other girl when an explosion shook the entire facility. Even as the two braced themselves and an alarm went off, security doors locked down the area around them.

Sera regathered her wits as Wynne struggled with the door and began ansible communication with the System to attempt to gather information on what was going on. And separated from Beta, too. Even if this turned out to be something she could handle, she just knew Yuna wasn't going to let her hear the end of it any time soon.

While reports were compiling, Wynne suggested they make conversation and decided boys were a normal enough subject, though it didn't take long for Sera to suspect she'd never actually comprehended what a "boy" was, despite having been with Paragon earlier in the day. Still, that wasn't the most interesting poking point the girl had presented. The pigtailed Mother Unit arched a skeptical eyebrow. "This bookshelf and record player in your living room. Were these things on your ship? Y'know, the one you crashed into unsalvageable scrap metal in the middle of the zoo?"

Beta & Paragon

"Understood," the blonde child had replied when Melody had given the instruction, and continued while the woman directed the rest of the room to look away. "Terminating combat and secURity protoooooocolls ..." The last bit faded out like a speaker powered by a dying battery, but went largely unnoticed by the rest of the room. In actual practice, an Edenite should have simply laid back and gone to sleep, but because her current state had no access to such "cosmetic" behavior routines, she instead simply shut down into standby mode on her feet.

The staring contest between Melody and General Fletcher was soundly interrupted by the cookie going skipping across the floor as the blonde alien child crashed gracelessly forward onto her face.

* * *

Hopefully, Melody had access to medical files, because she would find out upon opening up the girl's interior, her scans weren't wrong. Edenites were built less like robots and more like humans. Vital organs all seemed to have counterparts within her chest and many cosmetic (from a robotic perspective) also did. The child's twelve-year-old chest even bore developing mammary glands. At the same time, it was equally obvious she wasn't an organic being. Besides the obvious bit about her chest cavity being capable of opening without ill effect, there wasn't the mess one would see when cutting open a human. No loose blood or fluids spilled out or pooled in the cavity in offense at the intrusion. Everything kept moving right along, albeit at a standby level that would be too low to support human life. The heart was so placid that if it weren't for the incredibly sensitive digital equipment Melody had at her disposal, she might have doubted that it was still circulating fluid through the veins. Which were fibrous and hardy organic-ish "tubing" that stubbornly resisted being cut with conventional tools. And though the fluid looked like blood, and played a similar role in terms of resource distribution throughout the body, it was a much more sophisticated artificial fluid that proved to have greater transfer efficiency and clotting properties. There were even signs of an incredibly advanced auto-diagnostic-and-repair function involved in it. The lungs, however, didn't seem to take in anything more than the most minute quantities of oxygen, repelling most of it back into the environment. Instead, it took in microscopic materials and seemed to check them for various properties. Despite looking so very human, it seemed an Edenite did not require air to breathe, and were certainly environmentally secure.

Perhaps the biggest find, however, was an answer to the diffused energy generation she had detected. The ability to acquire a "cell" sample revealed that, even right down to the cellular level, Edenites mimicked humans. Their cells seemed structured virtually identically, at least in terms of parallel components, to human cells. And just like in humans, their bodies' energy was generated in these cells. Except their mitochondria equivalent were nano-scale plasma reactors. Countless trillions of the most powerful type of energy generation known to man throughout the entire body. And they were insanely efficient. While a single human cell would quickly perish due to exposure and starvation, Beta's continued chugging right along, a single nanoscale machine city going right along as if it were still part of the whole. Theoretically, certainly, it would eventually starve, but for the time being, it seemed quite content to just keep doing its thing. Well, until it divided. That must have been a shock for the techies. Organic cellular reproduction in a machine.

Wynne & Sera

“Okay, so I landed it a little roughly.” Wynne said. She bent at the waist, seating herself on an antique chair behind her. She crossed her arms, giving something akin to a half-hearted glare to Sera. “I’m sure all it needs is some minor buffing and then it’ll make a nice--”

Whatever nice thing Wynne’s spaceship and home would have made, Sera never found out. With a cry, Wynne fell backwards onto the floor, as the antique table and chair nearby vanished in a beam of light. A beam of light that seemed oddly reminiscent of Paragon’s appearance, albeit less fancy looking. As the alien girl got to her feet, muttering something about ‘crappy pine furnishings’ or something, information began returning instantly. The entire facility was being rapidly evacuated. Humans and special toys were being hurried onto aircraft furnished by Cynthia’s underworld allies. Her costumes, furniture and other toys however were being captured via a localized, pirated version of IRIS called...CIRIS. Really, CIRIS? The criminal underworld managed to copy enough of IRIS to get a working version of their own running, and they called it...CIRIS?

In any case, the influx of new information suggested they only had a few minutes before the entire facility was set to self-destruct, with Cynthia evidently leaving the two for dead. Wynne on the other hand was staring down at where the missing furniture had been, waving her hand on or around where it had been. It struck the Mother Unit that Wynne was probably entirely unaware of the danger they were in. Though one had to wonder, how would she react to the news that the entire underground labyrinth was about to explode around them?

Beta & Paragon

58/100, F-

That was all Melody could think of as she gazed down at the girl Beta’s now open chest cavity. It may sound odd to hear, but all sciences were not alike. When she had been first built, she had been programmed to assist her creator in his work almost as an afterthought. Nevertheless, she found herself excelling at everything they sought to build and create. Physics, Chemistry, Robotics, Advanced Energy Compression, whatever--she’d been a professional at it. Learning in leaps and strides, as Doctor James Wiles had cheered her on. When it came to other things--things she hadn’t needed to use in the workshop--and biology in particular...

Well, she was really out of her element here.

She had immediately turned of course, gently lifting Beta with her smaller synthskin arm. Ignoring the worried, fearful gasp from her younger brother as she turned the girl over, only to reveal the hole in the girl’s chest, and the cacophony of unconventional moving parts within. Melody sat there for a moment or two, her silvery hand raised, ready to repair mechanical parts she saw no sign of in Beta’s chest cavity. Uncomprehending of her own inability to take in what she saw.

“Uhh, guys...” She finally said, glancing over one shoulder back at the group. Her long brown hair hid the worry in her face--a fact she was very thankful of, even as she crouched over the girl’s body in her arms. “We may have a bit of a problem.”

“...What do you mean?” General Fletcher asked warily. Melody turned, giving a nervous smile.

“Well, you remember when I read out my resume and whatnot? About how I was the best mechanic in the business? Well I wasn’t counting on her...not having any mechanics I’ve any experience with.” Melody propped the girl in her arms up gently, allowing her commanding officer a view of the girl’s internal compartment. The commander and the two ARC robots beside him blankly stared for a moment or two.

“Rrright.” General Fletcher said, turning to the door. “Hang on. Let me get something really quickly.”

The door hissed as the man exited the room. Melody quickly turned her gaze on Paragon, who was still staring at the open recesses of Beta’s chest cavity, as though gazing upon an alien world no man had yet seen. She mouthed his nickname, snapping him out of his revere as she shook her head, making a line-of-sight gesture with her hand. Embarrassed that he was so rude, the boy turned, kicking at the ground as he went. The door at the end of the room hissed open as the General came back in, triumphantly holding aloft what looked like a data chip, a datapad under his other arm as he advanced. Melody gave something akin to a confused scowl.

“What’s that?”

“This? Oh its nothing.” General Fletcher said, holding it up. “Its just your...brother’s? Sister’s? I can never tell which is Psyche--your sibling’s spare medical folder. She updated her knowledge of human biology and theoretical biology just before she left again. I figured it might have SOMETHING useful on it.”

“But...That’s...Psyche’s.”

“Yeah, so?”

“Have you ever worn someone’s past thoughts or memories, General?”

“...Worn?”

“Its...like wearing a set of someone else’s running pants, and they're a size too big. It feels really weird.”

“What do running pants have to do with anything?”

“Its a metaphor.”

“Why are you making metaphors when you’ve a patient on your hand?” The general asked. He lifted the datapad, plugging in the datachip as he gave a confident smile to his subordinate. “You’ve got this.”

Melody opened her mouth to protest, moments before the stream of data from the chip began reaching her transceiver. It seemed the Commander’s mind was set. She turned to her patient, blowing air out of her mouth as she tried to calm herself. She held up her larger, silvery hand. This wouldn’t do. Inside the girl’s soft, delicate chest cavity, who knew what a giant trembling arm could do. Slowly, almost reluctantly, Melody eased the girl onto her Silver Arm, freeing her synthskin covered right arm. She gazed down at it, wondering how Psyche had always managed to make ‘her’ hands seem so graceful and in control. By contrast, Melody’s hands looked large and cumbersome. She turned her eyes down to Beta’s exposed innards. A determined look replaced the nervousness from before. Beta was counting on her to do her job. She couldn’t do anything less. She gently leaned in, the sensors in her eyes beginning an optical scan, checking for any kind of anomaly or anything that might be out of place.

Well, besides cellular meiosis as part of a machine’s life cycle.

Wynne & Sera

Sera looked over the situation with Wynne, but thought differently. The girl probably was more aware than she acted. That had been her pattern so far, anyway. Nevertheless, it was clearly time to go. "Hrmm," she finished. "I think it's time we get going."

The pigtailed girl moved toward the sealed door and waved a hand across its surface. "A pity. I was really looking forward to the tour." And the door that Wynne had been unable to lift opened so politely for the Mother Unit.

Paragon & Beta

According to Melody's new biology databanks, there seemed absolutely nothing wrong. Beta was, erm, a perfectly healthy tween girl. If anything, the emphasis was on "perfect." Throughout the entire chest cavity, there wasn't the slightest sign of organic imperfection. This was perhaps an even louder proclamation of the girl's artificial origins than the durability of the systems, themselves. If there was anything defective with the alien android, it certainly wasn't with her primary organs or physical health.

Wynne & Sera

The girl in her flapper outfit stared after her companion, blinking confusedly. After a moment or two, she stepped forward, before falling to the ground. She stood up, muttering something about ‘earthling endurance training’, before pulling off the shoes she was wearing. Grumbling slightly, Wynne padded after Sera on bare feet.
The two stepped out into the corridor, the building rocking beneath another explosion. Wynne seemed to gasp excitedly at the sound of the explosion.

“Ooh! Explosions! C’mon Sera, let’s join in! Pewpewpew!”

Her arm raised, a green misty glow appearing around it as she threw an arm up, a brilliant burst of plasma striking the wall before she turned and lunged her arm again, striking at the floor. A third and fourth blast went out before she threw her arm up, the green fire bursting through the ceiling. Through the hole, Sera thought she could see a patch of blue sky, though Wynne seemed far too preoccupied to notice.

Beta & Paragon

Melody spent a moment or two, glancing from synthetic organ to synthetic organ with an increasingly distressed look on her face. She had always felt her hands were too large. Maneuvering her one hand throughout Beta’s chest in search of what could be wrong was a taxing experience for her.

*clank*

She glanced down as her foot nudged something, blowing hot air from her nostrils as she noticed she had kicked the plate of cookies she had brought in, the china plate chipping against her metal foot. Carefully withdrawing her hand from Beta, she reached down with her other arm, gathering up the plate and placing it nearby where Beta’s head was, along with the glass of milk that had gone in, before turning back to the commander.

“General! I need a medkit, stat! Along with a scalpel, foreceps...erm, dissection pins...”

“Dissection pins?”

“...Yes.”

“And you need dissection pins for that?”

“Well, in lieu of the collective minds of Harmony Incorporated, United Cell Laboratories, Harland Industries, the Nishimura Corporation, the National Russian Research Institute and the Chinese Academy for Technology, we’ll have to make do, won’t we?”

“...Okay. Someone get this girl a hospital in a box. And a banana.”

“...Banana?”

“I’ve been standing here watching you poke around a tween’s belly for half an hour. I’m starving.”

Sera & Wynne

Was this really how her own sister saw her? Sera had to wonder. She had hoped to progress toward the primary bomb and disable it so as to protect the surrounding area and any carbons therein from harm, but Wynne had gotten excited by the explosions and proceeded to join in. There was no way she could safely proceed down that planned path with a girl blasting holes everywhere the whole way.

There was only one other recourse. She had the system cross-reference her location with the charting Beta had inadvertently done navigating the facility and plotted the nearest most likely union. A wall a hundred fifty yards down the corridor. She grabbed the arm Wynne wasn't firing with and promptly started dragging the older girl behind her as she broke into a run. The wall was approaching ahead. With her free hand, she waved what almost seemed like magic before her as energy coalesced before her into an orb of plasma, then with one final gesture, launched ahead of her to blow a garage-sized hole in the wall.

On the other side, a battlescarred myriad of stairs presented itself. As she passed through, she looked up and could promptly identify the one Beta had taken several stories up. They could try to follow the maze of staircases to get where they needed to go, but time wasn't on their side.

"Wynne, how good are you at jumping?"

Beta & Paragon

Speaking of food, when Melody glanced back over at the tray of cookies, her systems likely counted them up. She was likely too distracted to recall just how many she picked up, but there was one less than what she brought into the room, even after accounting for the one the child had dropped when she went into maintenance mode. Nothing to be concerned with, it was surely rolling around on the floor somewhere.

It wasn't until she bent over to start working again with the new tools having arrived that she noticed something odd. The stomach was working. Her sensors identified the materials within. Flour, egg, cocoa ... cookies!?

As her gaze no doubt immediately snapped up to the child's face, the girl looked like a deer caught in headlights, nothing like the soldier's dead stare from before, especially without armor. Instead, she looked like a tween child who had gotten caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Quite literally, since another was being held to her slightly open mouth at that very moment.

Slowly, very slowly, with a nervous grin on her chocolate chip smeared face, the girl reached back to put the cookie back on the plate.

Wynne & Sera

The girl followed Sera, or followed her as best one could were one dragged by one arm. Her other arm remained thrust behind her, continuing to fire plasma bolts from her open hand in an effort to amuse herself. She blinked at Sera’s question, before giving her a broad, supportive grin.

“Jumping? I haven’t had much experience trying it, but it looks like one part...leg spasm...and one part falling. Paddie said I was the best faller of my 200,000 brothers and sisters. It can’t be that hard!”

She reached over, looping one arm around Sera’s waist before giving her legs a little wobble. Nothing happened, until another explosion burst from nearby, echoing through the halls of the building behind them. Wynne looked up, closing her eyes, before her legs gave another wobble. Everything was still for a second, before a series of lights in her body seemed to turn on in strategic locations. Her feet, hands, ankles, wrists, knees and elbows slowly emitting a faint glow.

A strange energy seemed to fill the air, before an audible hum seemed to emanate from the girl. With a sudden burst of power, which seemed to lack the thrust of a conventional propulsion system, the two rose into the air, slowly at first, but rapidly gathering speed. Flights of stairs zoomed past, a look of serenity and eager expectation on Wynne’s face. At first, Sera might have guessed she was doing this completely blind, but upon looking closely, she could see Wynne’s right eye was barely open as the two flew upwards. Wisps of green light floated alongside them, more of Wynne’s plasma energy floating by, rising to knock pieces of descending rubble aside as more explosions rocked the facility.

Another explosion ripped the roof of the stairwell, cement and rebar raining down on them. More orbs of plasma rushed upward, striking the falling debris to either side as before. It seemed there hadn’t been enough plasma energy summoned however, or perhaps Wynne had missed some pieces of rubble, what with her eyes being almost shut. Two large pieces of concrete and rebar drifted towards them, threatening to crush the two. The light in Wynne’s joints seemed to intensify, the two pieces of debris slowing in their descent before languidly floating up with them. The two floated for a few more moments as they drifted above the secret base, explosions rippling across the dockyard as the two floated on regardlessly. After a minute or two more, Sera could see the edge of an apartment block approaching, the two of them and their concrete companions drifting over the edge before the lights in Wynne dimmed, the two landing gently on the ground, as if carried by a peaceful giant. Wynne breathed in deeply, as if trying to imitate the sound of a human panting before giving Sera a smile.

“How...'d...How’d I do?”

Beta & Paragon

Melody turned to the now awake Beta, gazing at her with wide, unexpected surprise at first before a gentle smile creased her face. She pushed the plate of cookies closer to where Beta lay, giving her a broadening smile. She had the look of a big sister about her, complimenting her brown ponytail, as well as the worn pants and purple shirt she wore, the image of what might have been a heavy metal or electronica label smeared with oil and laced with holes.

“Go ahead, I baked them for you, you know. Paragon doesn’t normally bring guests over. Though I’m surprised at your appetite. I thought you didn’t need ’nutrient based fuel’.” She moved the milk in arm’s reach, before offering her left hand to shake with the tween’s. “I’m...not sure if you remember me from ten minutes ago. I’m Melody, Paragon’s big sister and Team Elite Mechanic. I look out for everyone here.”

Wynne & Sera

Sera stepped away as she released and took a moment smoothing her dancing outfit as she gathered her thoughts. "Wow," she concluded. "That was quite remarkable, Wynne. When I asked how well you handled jumping, I was really just trying to make sure you could keep up. I wasn't expecting a first class flight out."

The shorter, green-haired, younger-looking girl grinned widely at her seemingly exhausted friend. "Next time, though, I call dibs on the rights to show off."

Beta & Paragon

"I'm Beta!" the girl sunnily returned the handshake with her chocolate-stained hand. "And ten minutes ago, I'm pretty sure I was getting hit in the head by an industrial magnet crane." Only Paragon likely would have recalled the way Tiger-san had silenced his bawling kidnap victim and noticed the time error, a rather unusually blatant anomaly for such a sophisticated android as an Edenite, and yet hadn't the other Beta, the dead-eyed tin soldier, also mentioned chronology issues?

There wasn't much opportunity to think on that, however, as she apparently keyed in that Melody had mentioned Paragon, and her eyes widened. "Wait, you said Paragon? Paragon's here?"

And she sat bolt upright - despite any restraints they might have been using, and she didn't even notice their presence if they had been there - as her eyes immediately picked him out from the crowd and she gave him a wave, unaware, apparently, that her chest cavity was still wide open for the room to see. "Paragon! There you are! Did you save me from that transforming tiger?"

Wynne & Sera

Wynne blinked at Sera’s compliment, as if somehow trying to process what she said. She blinked once, then twice, before she gave Wynne a blank, assessing look.

“...I was showing off? I thought I was just jumping...”

Wynne pulled her fur-lined coat closer around her, glancing around the rooftop at the green of the parks, nestled in the suburban neighborhoods around them, the blue of the harbor, and the skyline of New York City beyond it. Wynne stared in silent wonder at the light of the setting sun reflecting off the bay and shimmering towers in the distance. Then, she took a step or two forward, before looking down warily off the edge of the building.

“Sooo...how do we get down?”

Beta & Paragon

To say the boy blushed was an understatement. At the sight of the girl’s open chest cavity, his synthskin turned a brilliant shade of scarlet, the deep blush in his cheeks contrasting to his dark hair and baby blue eyes. After a second or two of staring, the boy seemed to master his body, giving out a shrill kind of surprised shout before he turned, hands flying up to his eyes as he did so. The sound of soft rubber against concrete could be heard as he stepped timidly backwards, face turned to the side and hands blocking his vision as he walked blindly towards the door.

“Sorry! I’m sorry Beta!”

Beta felt a large, heavy hand descend on her shoulder, before Melody and her silver arm eased her back against the makeshift operating table she had been using. That is to say, the floor. A flash of movement caught her eye. She glanced up. General Fletcher was holding his watch up, giving her a serious glare. Melody glanced back down to Beta, before giving her a warm, but still uneasy smile as she looked the tween in the eye.

“Beta, do you know where you are? Or why you’re here?”

Wynne & Sera

At the confusion about jumping, Sera shook her head, then proceeded to illustrate. "This is jumping," she said as she gave little hops up and down that caused the rings on her costume to jingle pleasantly. "This is also jumping." And she crouched lower and shot two stories up into the air above the rooftop, but without anything beyond the initial propulsion, she reached an apex as the force expended was drained by the gravity of the planet and exceeded, at which point, she came back down, landing with a slight crouch to absorb the force of impact.

"This ..." And this time, she floated up into the air in an electromagnetic plasma field, then did a couple quick loops around Wynne and then back to hovering before her. "... is flying." Her feet touched back down as the field dissipated, and she held up a finger as she proceeded to define them for her in case any confusion remained. "Jumping is springing clear of the ground or other support by a sudden muscular effort. Flight is a continued movement through the air carried by wings, wind or any other force or agency. Jumping is a single moment of propulsion to initiate takeoff, while flight is a prolonged propulsion to remain in the air longer than what gravity would have normally permitted with a mere jump."

When Wynne examined the edge and questioned how they would descend, Sera went over to examine the distance, herself, and merely shrugged. "We could jump down, no biggie. Or, y'know ..." She pointed first to the fire escape and then to the door to the interior stairwell. "We could just take the stairs."

Beta & Paragon

Beta was incredibly confused by the boy's reaction, which showed plainly on her face as Melody eased her back. "No, not really," she answered. "What's wrong with Paragon?"
